One Last Look at 2017
At the end of 2017 a number of our Thursday Doors contributors posted year-end retrospectives of their own favorite door finds.
Before turning the page on 2017 once and for all I thought I’d do something similar myself.
For my look back at last year I decided to narrow it down to one favorite for each month.
It was not an easy task but is was a fun exercise to take one last look back at all the doors I captured last year.
From the Plateau Mont-Royal borough in Montréal – no doubt, it’s the colours that made this one my number one pick for January.
This beauty sitting in the snow is from St. George’s Anglican church in downtown Montreal – it made the cut as my choice for February.
Another church door made the cut for March. This one is from the First Baptist Church in downtown Ottawa.
This charming example of 19th century Québecois architecture in Vieux Ste-Rose north of Montréal was my fave for April.
My choice for May was this small apartment complex with the candy-cane coloured trim in L’Assomption which is north-east of Montréal.
This little mailbox door found on Ile D’Orleans near Québec City was just too a-door-able not to choose for June 😀
This black and red beauty from the Byward Market in Ottawa stood out among all the interesting doors I posted back in July.
August was another tough choice, with this beauty from one of the buildings at the Loyola Campus of Concordia University in Montréal narrowly beating out a few other strong contenders from the same neighbourhood.
For September this Viking door from the L’Anse-aux-Meadows National Historic Site in northern Newfoundland was my top pick.
I chose this Viking church door also at the Viking Village site also at L’Anse-aux-Meadows as the best of my October doors.
My top pick from the November posts was this weathered beauty from the old Église Ste-Eustache church north-east of Montréal.
For December with the holidays on everyone’s mind, this one from the local outdoor Christmas market in Terrebonne was not a difficult choice.
That’s it for 2017 and by all accounts I’d say that it was a good year for door discoveries.
I’m already looking forward to seeing what we’ll find in 2018. I wish you all many fruitful doorscursions this year!
As always, thanks so much for visiting 🙂

Wonderful retrospective, Norm. I have such a thirst for color — of course I liked those best. And how could I resist those candy-cane awnings — how cheerful! Hugs.

Ahhh… this was such a treat to revisit the best of the best. Thank you, Norm.

I want a purple-ish French Canadian house! And I can’t believe the red awnings are from MAY. Wow. Time flies. Lovely retrospective. To 2018 doors!

Thanks Tara. Yes indeed time does fly. As I sifted through all of these I was struck by how much variety I found last year. I hope 2018 will be at least as fruitful.

Wow Norm! It was so much fun going back and looking through all your amazing door captures. I was like, “ohh, I remember that one….yes, that’s a gorgeous one….mhmmm…great choice.” 😉 Thanks for the retrospective. And thanks for hosting such a fun gathering! 🙂

Thanks Amy. Sorting trough them all to pick a monthly favorite was a fun exercise. In fact I’m going to encourage others to try it next December as well.

What a lovely collection! Even I looked at them in 2017 it was fun to review. My favorite is the first one.

You could certainly have a beautiful calendar with all your doors per month! Looking forward to 2018!

You know what? A calendar is a very cool idea. Hmmm, maybe next year. Thanks for the suggestion 🙂

Some very cool doors, Norm. Love the Viking doors. Also, the church doors with the different sized pushie-plates (a little rusty on my door terminology). I wonder if that was an accident or done for some mysterious reason I’ll never understand (as with most things churchie).
LikeLiked by 1 person
Thanks Leah. The doors with the different sized push-plates are from the university. My guess is that one plate has a handle and lock in it, at one point it must have been replaced and they didn’t bother matching it.

Push-plates! Yes. That waa up there, somewhere!
Your guess is likely right.

In trying to choose a favorite, I noticed you went to a lot of churches! Hope it had a good influence on you:):) A belated very happy New Year to you and yours.

Lots of churches around these parts. They’re an integral part of our history, plus some of the most interesting architecture 🙂

Am happy these churches are still in use and preserved! In Holland is a very depressive trend: the cathedrals not any more in use have been sold to storage companies, and because of that windows have been broken in, etc.

It’s impossible to pick a favorite. They are all winners. Is that a purple staircase in the first photo?

Not surprisingly, you have 12 great choices, but I also couldn’t help but notice the changing seasons from month to month. I also couldn’t help notice the different colours, textures, and elegance (for lack of a better word). All in all, I’d say you had a spectacular door year in 2017.

You picked a nice group of winners, Norm. Not a bum in the lot, as they used to say. I was trying to pick a favorite. Out of the first few, I like the steep-arched Anglican church. After that, it got too hard. They’re all good.
Welcome back and I hope 2018 is off to a good start!

Yeah that purple one is hard to beat. That whole stretch of homes on that street is often referred to as our equivalent to San Francisco’s Painted Ladies. The entire block of buildings is done in bright colors.

My favourite from your favourites would have to be the red and black door from July. It’s quite art deco looking and I know I wouldn’t be able to resist going through that door.
A great recap, Norm. I hope to join in a bit more than I did last year.
