Here’s my contribution for this week’s Tuesdays of Texture over at de monte y mar.
These are all from a visit to Ottawa at the beginning of February. Our visit coincided with the start of their annual Winterlude Festival.
I’ve mentioned before how we Canadians love to make excuses (that we call winter festivals) in order to get out, stay active, and have fun despite our long cold winters and after the Carnaval in Quebec City, Winterlude in Ottawa is one of the biggest and best known.
So what does this have to do with Texture?
Well, one of the fun events is their international ice sculpture competition that draws participants from every corner of the globe.
There’s texture galore in the finished works plus tons more in some of the behind the scenes shots of the artists at work:
And some bonus texture here:
As always, thanks for looking 🙂

I especially love the dragons! There’s just something intriguing about a flame-breather made of ice.

It looks like most sculptures are massive, are they all taller than a human? So much ice! My favorite part of this type of art is when they are shredding the ice and it flies everywhere. It’s a messy, lovely thing.
Thanks so much for sharing with us this week Norm!

Some of them are about waist high, but that polar bear and the ones you see guys working on from scaffolds are all 8-10 feet tall. It is a fun art form 🙂

Truly incredible. Looks like my sort of place 😉
And, yes, fascinating to watch the sculptors at work. Not a hobby you’d consider taking up, Norm…?

No, I don’t have enough time for the hobbies I already have: photography, woodworking, travel…adding another one to the mix wouldn’t be much use at the moment 🙂

Haha fair enough. We can just admire their ice sculptures instead 🙂

Norm, it is so fascinating to watch these artists at work. The first time we attended Winterlude, we watched throughout the weekend as the sculptures that began as blocks of ice, evolved into incredible pieces of art. The intricacy & the detail in them is unbelievable. The maple taffy & the beaver tails are pretty awesome too😋

As long as it’s only a few times a year Lynn, some traditions like maple taffy and beaver tails must be indulged in 🙂

I could feel a chill go through me just looking at the photos. These guys who produce these pieces of art are so creative. The one that caught my eye was a work-in-progress that looked like it might be a chariot when he was finished. Just the wheel was incredible.

Thanks Joanne I know what you mean. Yes that one piece has so much intricate work in it I just stood and stared at it for a few minutes trying to figure out how long it took to get it to that point.

I really love Ottawa in the summer …. I’m going to have to check it out in the winter. Outstanding shots of all that ice!

It is special. We didn’t have time to actually skate on the canal but we went down and walked on it for a few minutes which was kinda neat 🙂

I do like winter as well Janet. I just wish there was a way for it to start about 2 weeks before the holidays and then go away 2 weeks after 😀

Thank goodness for photography! I can’t imagine all that effort for something that is going to melt, but they are beautiful works of art. Thanks for sharing.
