Share Your World – Jan 16, 2017

Here are my answers to Cee’s Share Your World questions for this week.

1. Do you sleep with your closet doors open or closed?
Closed because that’s how my skeletons prefer it 😉

2. Do you take the shampoo and conditioner bottles from hotels?
Look at my profile picture; I have virtually no hair on my head so…ummm, why would I do this?

3. What is your usual bedtime?
I’m usually in bed by 9:30 or 10:00 on weeknights and unless I can get in an afternoon nap beforehand it’s rare I’ll stay up after midnight even on weekends.

4. Do you like to use post-it notes?
Post-it notes are the scourge of modern civilization!

Okay well that might be a bit if an exaggeration 😀 but no I don’t use them.

I find that a big note book works better for me. Post-it notes don’t always stay stuck, and sometimes get misplaced or covered up by other stuff.

People may find me weird, but when I’m working I carry a notebook and pen around with me all day long.

As I come across things that need to be done or followed up on during my day, I write them down in the notebook and then cross them off as I gradually get them done. This way notes never get misplaced or forgotten. It’s a technique that has served me well for many years.

Of course if I ever lose my notebook I’m totally screwed 😉

5. When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone on paper?
Sadly I honestly don’t remember.

I used to write letters to my wife for special occasions i.e. birthdays, anniversaries, etc…but sadly it has been years. I should get back to making that a habit again.

Outside of that I was never much of a letter writer and really, these days except for the occasional greeting card, few of us hand write letters anymore. Everything gets typed on computer, or some electronic device.

It’s faster, more efficient, but certainly a lot less personalized – I see both good and bad in that trade-off.

6. Any phobias?
No actual phobias but because of my health condition (Congestive Heart Failure) I am hyper-aware of my body and how it reacts to everything: hot weather, cold weather, fluid intake, salt intake, fatigue, catching colds or other bugs, cuts or anything that could lead to infection…the list goes on and on. Not so much a phobia as preventative maintenance I guess 🙂

7. How tall are you?
About 5’9″ – 1.75m.

However if you judge by weight, I should be 6’1″ – at least that’s what it says on the chart in my doctor’s office 😛

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

After two fun weeks off for the holidays, last week it was good to get back to a normal work routine. I’m still getting used to this whole working from home business, but I’m really appreciating the idea of not doing the daily commute.

This week we’re finally getting my mom online. She’s from that generation that was never really exposed to computers and had no use for them in her work life so she totally doesn’t understand tech stuff or the electronic world.

Over the past month she received a smart TV and a tablet as gifts so I’m looking forward to the barrage of “How do I?” questions once she starts trying to explore the online world.

I keep reminding myself to be patient. As they say, whenever we’re tempted to make fun of our parents for needing help with technology, just remember that there was a time when we needed their help to learn how to use a spoon.

Many thanks to Cee for running this fun weekly challenge. If you haven’t played along yet, pop on over to Cee’s blog and join in – everyone is welcome and she’s a wonderful hostess 🙂

Hey Norm, I’ve seen this challenge over at Cee’s but never participated. I must say the first part of yours this week read like a stand up comedy routine. You really had me laughing 🙂 I must read more of these and maybe even participate. Thanks for the giggles 🙂

I like that you show humor in your Share your World page, Norm. 🙂 I take shampoo even if I don’t use the particular kind they offer and ask family members if they would like to try a new kind out of a basket of other free samples. I include full size toothbrushes and small sized tubes of toothpaste. My kids grab up some when going camping or on their own trips. Yup, grown up and still using their Mom’s offerings. ❤ I like how you mentioned your Mom and how she taught you to use a spoon. Good to know that you will help her on the tablet and new TV, Norm. You are one of the good guys, my friend. 🙂

I used to write letters to people almost daily – then along came email. Now I can barely sign my own signature!

When I was working (ooops, I mean employed :p ), I use to keep a pocket notebook busy, carried a mid-sized day planner, and had a couple post-it dispensers on my desk. I preferred making notes in the day planner. Now as a retired guy, I don’t use any of these, and also never wear a watch! I put an occasional note on a whiteboard in the kitchen…

At home we keep a list on the kitchen counter near the pantry and as we notice we’re running low on something it gets added to the list for the next shopping run.

  8. Dare I confess to how many notebooks I have around? No. I’ll just say I use them – a lot. 🙂 Applause to you for getting your Mom up and running. As you patiently answer her questions, you might consider a place where you can list her questions and your answers so she can refer back because let’s face it, we forget when it is all new. It will take repetition for her to get the hang of it, but if she can look back and not bother you with the same questions, she’ll feel comfortable asking a new question. Once she gets use to email, give her mine, I’ll be glad to be another person she can ask the same question to more than once. 🙂

Thanks for the suggestions Judy, but I’m afraid it’s going to be challenging. Mom is not big on taking, using, or referring back to notes. The only thing that works with her is repetition conditioning

Although I admit to having post-its all over, I am a notebook person, too. It goes everywhere with me. (And occasionally it has post-its in and on it…..)

That’s neat you’re getting your mom online. My mother used CAD, and has had a home PC for decades, but I still get a fair amount of questions. I like to feel helpful to her, that helps me be patient.
I use post-its at work, but at home, I too, am a notebook user! Perhaps it’s a ‘volume of work’ issue. lol
Have a great week Norm 🙂

  11. I’m a note-taking and list maker, too, Norm, although I’ve actually begun putting my important events on my phone. That still takes much thought for me to remember to do it. I also carry one of the little datebooks that has one week on every two pages. The last two years, they’ve been impossible to find, only the ones with the tiny boxes and one month on every two pages and they’re too small. I had to go to a larger, hardcover format that I was fortunate to find at all! Every day, I have a list on actual paper of what I need/want to do that day, I can carry it around and mark off the items I’ve done. I use paper from all the junk mail, cut into ninths if the backs are blank. Works great! 🙂

Awesome Janet, you sound very organized. I have embraced technology for a lot of things but for note taking I can’t seem to get beyond pen and paper. But hey, it works 😃

I have been giving some thought to taking actual notes again. I’m not sure it won’t lead to more doodling, but I’m not sure I would mind if it did.

I too carried a notebook around at work and I was a compulsive note taker. People used to joke about it, but there were more than a few times those same people would come back months later to go back into my notes to look up a decision made that was now in dispute. Now that I’m working part time again, the note taking has resurfaced … but in a much toned down mode 🙂
