If We Were Having Coffee – Summer’s Here – The Circus is in Town!

If we were having coffee I’d have quite a bit to tell you. After all, it has been a while since we last sat down together and a lot has happened since then.

I’m happy to tell you that the #ThursdayDoors feature is really picking up steam. Last week we had the most entries ever, and this week we’re headed for another good turnout. It is fun to see how people have embraced this idea and are enthusiastic about playing along.

For those not familiar with #ThursdayDoors, if you have a few minutes you can read my inaugural post from a few months back that explains how it works and how to take part. Who knows; hopefully you can join in as well.

If we were having coffee I’d also tell you that I’m finally on Instagram! Having been told by so many photography friends that it was almost sacrilege for a big photo buff like myself to NOT be on IG, I set up an account this past winter and finally started posting to it a few weeks ago.

I’ll be posting a mix of images used here as well as a fair amount of new unique content that will only be seen there.  If you’re on Instagram as well, please do come look me up – I’d love to connect with as many of you as possible.

This is Formula-1 Grand Prix weekend here and the arrival of boatloads of celebrities and tourists from every corner of the globe that comes with it signals our unofficial start of summer. Things really start hopping when the Formula-1 circus comes to town. The bars, hotels, restaurants, and nightclubs all over downtown, Little Italy, and Old Montréal fill up for the week and the whole city becomes electric.

I do try to get out to see the race every few years but I won’t be attending this year. I’m finding that as I get older, being shoe-horned onto the limited access island where the track is located in the middle of the St-Lawrence River, along with 110,000 others is less fun than it used to be. Perhaps I’m getting claustrophobic in my old age 🙂

If we were having coffee I’d also let you know you that now that the warmer weather has settled in, don’t be surprised if I’m not around as much. You see summer is so short and seems to go by so fast that we really try to take full advantage of it while we can.

I’d tell you that I finished an Intro to Fashion Photography course last week that was very challenging, but also educational and lots of fun. There’s a few interesting courses for the summer session that I was looking at, but I’m kinda leaning more towards taking a break until fall.

Again, I want as much time as possible to enjoy summer without feeling stressed or rushed by homework and projects. And at my day job I have a big trade show to get ready for in July that should keep me as busy as I want to be right now.

We also got most of the vegetable garden in last week which always brings me back to my childhood and some really fond memories of my Grandmother.

It was funny how my gut told me to hold off on planting the tomato and pepper plants and wouldn’t you know it, we ended up getting some overnight frost twice this week – sure glad I waited 🙂

So now it’s your turn, what about you? Tell me what you’ve been up to.

You can link your own If We Were Having Coffee post with others on Part Time Monster and don’t forget to share them on Twitter under the hashtag #WeekendCoffeeShare

I didn’t realize there was a “If we were having coffee” hosting link. I have written my own periodically, and enjoy writing them as well as reading what others tell me over coffee. It’s a very relaxing way to get to know each other. Sounds like you have a busy summer; they sure go by quickly and I’ll make the most of mine, too!

I need to get out and get some photos of doors. I really do enjoy your Thursday Doors feature. I think I may still have a few more around here I haven’t photographed yet. I know what you mean about not wanting to be in big crowds. It fun when I was younger. Now? Not so much.
    Thanks for the coffee! 🙂

So glad to finally join in with Thursday Doors! I’ve loved the series from afar but being trapped at school made it a bit difficult. I’ve got enough door photos from Vancouver to last 4 months’ worth of Thursdays, though, so no more excuses (unless I need a Thursday for other content).

Can’t believe you’re still getting frosts there! We’re in the 90 degrees F range this week, and it’s humid. Lots of afternoon thunderstorms. Hope you’ll enjoy being out in the warmth while you can for sure, and I imagine there’ll be lots of photos when you’re back on the blog for the winter. 😀

  7. I must confess, I am not on Instagram yet – probably the only platform I have held off on, not sure why, maybe because I am worried about Social Media overload? Have a great weekend!

As you know, I am trying to get back to photography and the challenges are some good inspiration. I would tell you over coffee that we just bought a new home and sold ours (assuming all inspections pass). Therefore, I may be a bit absent from the blogosphere. Secondly, I would ask how do you do so much? Happy summering to you and yours!

I love the Thursday Doors series. I keep wanting to get out to look for interesting doors to photograph but it hasn’t happened due to health and the weather. Now that I’m back on my feet and the weather is drying out, I’m hoping it will happen.

  12. If we were having coffee, I’d say I hope you are feeling better, glad your Thursday Doors is a hit, applaud your enjoying the summer, wish you good luck in Vegas, and ask you to ‘please’ explain to me what the purpose is of Instagram. I have just never understood it. I know I need to get out from under my rock so explain it to me. 🙂

      Thanks Judy 😀
Instagram is just a way to share individual images with others. It was meant primarily for spontaneous mobile/cellphone shots, but photographers use it to show off their best work as well.

  13. Not forgetting that the Women’s Soccer world cup also kicks off this weekend in Canada, Norm.

Good to see you back and enjoy the summer while it is still there with you. It’s yet to arrive in our part of the world.

I was excited to see you on instagram! I’m not a photographer, but I love Instagram. I mostly have pics of Owen or pics of my drinks haha, but I like seeing the photos of people I follow. I hope your summer is off to a good start, Norm!

I’d say cheers but that seems odd with coffee. We should cheers with wine. Did you buy anything from the wine truck?

Yeah we’ll save the cheers for later, with wine of course. No we didn’t try anything from that wine truck last weekend, but when we do I’ll keep you posted.

I am applying for jobs in Wichita, which I haven’t put on my blog because of the drama queens I work with reading it…but fingers crossed by next month I’ll be living in a place where there is cool things to do. There is a whole bar devoted to wine. I’m not sure if they have wine trucks, but they have all kinds of fun things to do and phenomenal food. Plus, a job that doesn’t suck the life out of me will help. I’m excited to move to an actual city instead of a dinky town that has more cows than people.

If I were having coffee, today at least, I would tell you that I have a family I care about, the wife is Caucasian and her husband works with me at the warehouse. He is black and is the most boisterous and positive person. It started out about two years ago, his asking me as a single Mom and Nana, to go to parties and family gatherings. Today, their is a celebratory beach party for one of his boys, I will be going this year with my oldest daughter and her two sons. I am ‘missing’ a baseball game of grandson this morning, but need to do my blogging while the library is open. Fun times and I hope you have a wonderful weekend, Norm.

If we were having coffee, I’d be asking where that trade show is going to be and how I could pretend to be a vendor and get in for a look. I’d be right with you on the garden thing. My wife’s plants are going in just now, after a cold and rainy snap. Of course I’d know about the Thursday Doors deal, but I would tell you how please I am that you finally found the key to getting me to participate. I look forward to creating that post each week – I love doors! I’d also mention that I’m glad you’re feeling better.

It’s crazy Dan; Vegas in July. When we leave the hotel at 8 in the morning to head over to the convention center it’s already 104° outside! Thankfully we stay indoors through the worst part of the day.
I’m really glad to see you’re having so much fun with the doors feature 🙂
