Doors in Rosemont/Petite-Patrie, Montréal

Finally! A real on-foot, get-out-of-the-car-and-walk-around doorscursion this week. And it was in the city no less 🙂

Located in the central/eastern part of the island of Montréal, Rosemont/Petite-Patrie is geographically one of the largest boroughs in the city. At almost 16 square kilometers and closing in on 150,000 residents the area where I grew up is a primarily working class, quiet residential neighbourhood.

The older parts of the borough are known for their tree-lined streets,

and an over all higher ratio of duplexes, triplexes, and small appartement blocks rather than detached single family homes. I guess that’s a fancy, politically correct way of saying it’s more densely populated than some of the richer neighbourhoods 😉

They also have lots of those crazy outdoor winding iron staircases that I’ve mentioned in previous posts are one of Montréal’s most unique architectural anomalies.

Being densely populated doesn’t mean it can’t be pretty too.

A gate to an apparent back yard oasis

You’ll also find a healthy mix of all the things you’d normally expect in an urban setting: restaurants, cafés, shops, schools, places of worship, and loads of delightful street-art is scattered throughout the borough.

Of course I had to stumble upon this mural of a door!

It is also home to Montréal’s Little Italy and arguably the best and certainly the biggest farmer’s market in the city, Jean-Talon Market. Both are areas that I will eventually get around to showing you, but not today 🙂

For today’s doorscursion I stuck to the quieter residential streets and found lots of loveliness to share.

To be honest I was surprised to find so many well-maintained or recently-redone beauties all within a few blocks of each other.

When you see scenery like this is it any wonder that the borough is seeing a steady increase in popularity among all demographics these days?

Even though I moved out of this neighbourhood almost 25 years ago and I’m not planning on moving back into the city in the foreseeable future, whenever I go back to this part of town, it still feels like home.

And I would hazard a guess that even the birds agree…it’s a nice place to live 🙂

Always look up, even when you’re searching for doors because you never know what you might find.

The birdhouse and the painted door on bricks were big winners. How wonderful to be out and about again. I noticed every home but one had the same wrought iron fencing, yet they all had different and beautiful porch ceilings. I guess your wonderful photos made me look up. Thank you, Norm.

  3. So great to see you out and about again. And what a lovely place you chose to ramble. The door mural made me smile as if it was waiting there for you to showcase it here :-). Welcome back (to your former) home.

I’m happy you are now and about. We bought a car so we can get about and also look for a place to live outside NYC. No time for doors this week.

The old stomping grounds look mighty fine, Norm. It’s nice to be able to go back and still have the feeling of home. I love the tree-lined street and the well-kept doorways, but the mural is a wow. A perfect addition to a Thursday Door post 🙂

I likes the faux door (mural) and the birdhouse the best, but they’re all lovely. And I want one of those outside staircases. I haven’t been outside out of my car, except at the park — and there are no doors there. 😦 COVID!!! *shakes fist at the sky*

  10. What a lovely neighborhood. While it was hard to choose from all your wonderful shots, I think my favorite is the second photo. I really like the iron circular staircase and the small stain glass windows. I’m so glad to hear you were able to get out and about! Have a nice week ahead.

Holy cow, Norm! These are fantastic! I love the ‘painting’ of the door, the wee door on the bird house, and my goodness, I wonder if the people at 3110 would let me know where they got that beautiful glass inlay! Just spectacular! Cher xo

  14. Isn’t it great to get out and about, Norm? I’ll never take my freedom of movement for granted again. From next week we can travel anywhere in the country and I can’t wait to see my mother and my grandchildren. Love the door mural but my favourite is the last wee door. I’m glad you looked up.

A remarkable selection of doors, Norm! Looks like a delightful place for a stroll on a mild day!
I wonder though, when you do these suburban wanderings, have you ever taken a photo of a door to a random house, and later found out that it belonged to someone you know? If this was your old neighbourhood, I guess it would be possible (?)

No I’ve never taken a picture of a door only to find out later that it belonged to someone I knew. I guess it might happen eventually one day….

  32. Yay for your doorscursion in a lovely setting where it must have been great to grow up, even if it didn’t look quite like this before. Your doors are full of life and serenity and calm beauty. Every single one is marvellous but the most I love the curves, and that mural. Somebody knew you were coming. 🙂 Oh, and the birdhouse too!

Yay for my Piran as well. It took me a while but now I’m here. These were the first door photos I took.

Oooooo, 3110! Wonderful doors, as always. I always think I would love to live in a densely populated neighborhood, with lots of amenities nearby, but then I remember living in apartments, and all the noise and smelling other people’s cooking…. Think I’ll stay where I am. 🙂 My doors are leftovers from more scursiony times: https://marianallen.com/2020/06/na-driving-doors-thursdaydoors/

These are wonderful doors / entrances, Norm. I think the door at 3161 is the most interesting door I’ve seen. I can imagine making that, but the stress of getting it assembled would be daunting.

I love the curved iron stairs.

  36. I can just imagine how you loved being out and about, Norm. You found lots of attractive doors and I, like everyone else, really enjoyed the mural and birdhouse doors. Those staircases are unique, that’s for sure, although in winter I’m not sure they’d be much fun. Now that we’re in the desert, I’m relishing all the green scenes people post. 🙂 Happy Thursday!

  44. Hello, Norm. I discovered ‘Thursday Doors’ through lovely Sheree’s blog posts (‘View From the Back’). Doors are like people, isn’t it? They come in all shapes and sizes, all with a little story to tell (or lock behind).

I really enjoyed your Thursday doorscursion 🙂 especially the painted door and the bird house door. Your pictures got me thinking of the Postman, he must be one fit man climbing all those little flights of stairs.

Here’s my first Thursday Doors blog post. I used holiday images we took while visiting my native Romania – now I reside in South Africa so, either way you look, I’m on the other side of the world.

Hello Pat. Thank you and welcome to #ThursdayDoors! I’m glad you found us and decided to jump in – the more the merrier 🙂
The stairs are a unique and somewhat illogical feature, considering our winter weather, that found all over Montreal. It dates back to building codes from about 130 years ago increasing the minimum distance between the buildings and the street. To make up for the lost living space builders started putting the stairs on the outside of the buildings.

      • Thank you for visiting, Norm. I do appreciate it.
I can imagine the need to put some space between the snow piling up in winter and the entrance to a home.
I only know Montreal from the descriptions in Kathy Reichs’ “Bones” books, but I grew up knowing heavy winters so I understand the concept 🙂

A lovely community, that of ‘Thursday Doors’ and I am looking forward to traveling the world and learning about the art, the architecture, the history and the people of other countries – through their doors.

Sorry about the WP Spam issue, it happens at least once a week. I replied to your comment. 🙂
