Thursday Doors – June 25, 2020

Doors in Rosemont/Petite-Patrie, Montréal

Finally! A real on-foot, get-out-of-the-car-and-walk-around doorscursion this week. And it was in the city no less 🙂

Located in the central/eastern part of the island of Montréal, Rosemont/Petite-Patrie is geographically one of the largest boroughs in the city. At almost 16 square kilometers and closing in on 150,000 residents the area where I grew up is a primarily working class, quiet residential neighbourhood.

The older parts of the borough are known for their tree-lined streets,

and an over all higher ratio of duplexes, triplexes, and small appartement blocks rather than detached single family homes. I guess that’s a fancy, politically correct way of saying it’s more densely populated than some of the richer neighbourhoods 😉

They also have lots of those crazy outdoor winding iron staircases that I’ve mentioned in previous posts are one of Montréal’s most unique architectural anomalies.

Being densely populated doesn’t mean it can’t be pretty too.

You’ll also find a healthy mix of all the things you’d normally expect in an urban setting: restaurants, cafés, shops, schools, places of worship, and loads of delightful street-art is scattered throughout the borough.

Of course I had to stumble upon this mural of a door!

It is also home to Montréal’s Little Italy and arguably the best and certainly the biggest farmer’s market in the city, Jean-Talon Market. Both are areas that I will eventually get around to showing you, but not today 🙂

For today’s doorscursion I stuck to the quieter residential streets and found lots of loveliness to share.

To be honest I was surprised to find so many well-maintained or recently-redone beauties all within a few blocks of each other.

When you see scenery like this is it any wonder that the borough is seeing a steady increase in popularity among all demographics these days?

Even though I moved out of this neighbourhood almost 25 years ago and I’m not planning on moving back into the city in the foreseeable future, whenever I go back to this part of town, it still feels like home.

And I would hazard a guess that even the birds agree…it’s a nice place to live 🙂

Always look up, even when you’re searching for doors because you never know what you might find.
