Thursday Doors – March 5, 2020

Thursday Doors is a weekly feature allowing door lovers to come together to admire and share their favorite door photos from around the world. Feel free to join in on the fun by creating your own Thursday Doors post each week and then sharing your link in the comments below, anytime between Thursday morning and Saturday noon (North American eastern time).

Snowy Saint-Placide, Québec

On the shores of the Ottawa River, west of Montréal in the lower Laurentian county of Deux Montagnes (Two Mountains) you’ll find the lovely little community of Saint-Placide.

It’s a peaceful touristy waterfront community of about 2000 that in the summer becomes a hub of activity for recreational sailing, windsurfing, kite-surfing, and boating enthusiasts.

We took a drive to the area last weekend expecting it to be a scouting trip for a potential summer doorscursion. As you can see from these shots, winter is far from over in this part of the world and with the lovely snowy scenery I managed to capture a number of interesting shots.

I’m guessing that the river will be frozen solid for another few weeks, so ice fishing, snowmobiling, and kite-skiing are still in season.

Some crazies even drive their vehicles right out onto the ice. I guess it beats hauling supplies and fishing gear out onto the ice on foot…at least as long as your vehicle doesn’t end up going through the ice of course 😉

People taking chances on ice reminds me of my old post showing the ice-climbers I captured a few years ago at Montmorency Falls near Québec City: fun for those who enjoy that sort of thing, but just not the kind of risks that I’m willing to take.

When you turn away from shore the first thing you notice is how, as usual, the church managed to snag themselves some of the best prime real-estate in town.

Upon closer inspection I found it to be a simple building with a lovely old stone facade and some nice doors.

We wandered around a bit and found a few other nice old homes and doors that were worth stopping to admire.

I’ll definitely be heading back here when the weather gets warmer and I can take the time for a longer more enjoyable stroll around the area.

Until then, to share your Thursday Doors post just paste your link in the comments section below so that others can visit and have a look at your discoveries. Remember: you have until noon eastern North American time on Saturday to add your link.

As always, if you have the time, please take a few minutes to visit some of the Thursday Door posts shared by our other contributors.

Thanks for looking 🙂

  1. Enjoying your frosty captures – brings a breath of cool to my otherwise very warm Singapore morning!

    Hello.

What a great set of beautiful doors. I loved also the first photo very. This winter we did have possibility to walk on frozen lakes, because it has been “warm” in southern Finland!

    Have a good day!

The doors are good, and yes, the church has the best spot! Look at that sky!
I had just written a long comment about going out on the ice as a kid. I would only do it now if I were with someone native and knowledgeable who could ensure my safety to a reasonable extent. I wouldn’t drive on it, no matter what.

  9. Ohh, thanks so much for bringing as along. I love and miss this pristine serene white. And while the architecture of the church, houses and doors is beautiful, it’s the light that has it. Just look at that!

In my post you’ll find some things and beings that you know. They are always good for perspective (that’s why I share today’s post with the Lens-Artists challenge, sorry).

Thanks Manja. Yes it was just about the perfect time of day for the light. Without thinking about it I guess I times it that way considering I didn’t feel like leaving the house until mid-afternoon 😉

I was completely distracted by all the snow. As much as I’m not a fan of the white stuff, it does make a prettier photo than the brown blahness of this time of year. Plus you had beautiful blue skies … something we haven’t seen much of this winter!

You know I’m gonna say it…I’m loving your snow doors, lucky you! That very first series of photos of the church are lovely. Although the doors are somewhat brick-like in color, they sit nicely with the stone walls. Very pretty series of pictures Norm.

Wow, already you got already so many doors and beautiful buildings out of this visit. Your adventure hit the jackpot! Guess my parents being in their forties, moving to a colder climate never got them enthused into ice-recreation. which obviously had an effect on their kids. Ice skating is all we got into:)

That one shot of the church on the hill is definitely postcard worthy. You can’t do anything about the weather so might as well enjoy it. We have the opposite problem out here.

  23. Wow, still a lot of snow there. Those houses are all so well kept and look so pretty in that winter scene. It will be interesting to see them in warmer weather. I’m with you on your view of how crazy it is to drive a vehicle onto that ice, no matter how frozen it appears to be. Not worth the risk. Here are my doors for this week, thanks.

  31. Beautiful shots, as always Norm. I only went ice-fishing once in my life and that was more than enough. Besides being boring, it was terrifying to hear the ice crack and boom underneath us in the ice hut all day long. And then, to add insult to injury, I caught a terrible case of the flu from that experience. Much nicer to look at pictures of others enjoying their day on the ice.😉

Snow! We had hardly any snow this winter, Norm. These are beautiful buildings and doors, but I love seeing those gigantic piles of snow.

If have to seriously love ice fishing before I’d even think about driving out on the ice. I know it’s probably safe, but…

The house with the long porch and multiple balconies reminds me of New Orleans. I look forward to your return, but I enjoyed this post a lot.

Thanks Dan. I know that driving on the ice is usually pretty safe as long as they don’t go out too far; in fact I believe the ice thickness is tested regularly and they put out markers to let people know where it’s safe. The real daredevils are the snowmobilers we saw who went completely across the river. You couldn’t pay me enough to take chances like that: uh-uh, no thanks 😦
