Farm Scenes in Winter – Lanaudiere Region, Quebec

This week I thought I’d take you on a bit of a local tour to see what our little corner of the world looks like in the dead of winter.

As I’ve mentioned before, we live about a 35 minute drive north east of the city in what I call the deep burbs. It’s great that We can be in the city in short order whenever we have to but its even better, especially in summer that we’re only minutes away from farm country too.

I was out running a few local errands on a recent -15° C day and I as I drove past some of the barns, and sheds, and farmhouses along the way, I noticed that quite a few of them would make good wintry subjects for Thursday Doors.

There’s something beautifully desolate about a farm in winter.

Almost sad or perhaps melancholic; a lonely building or two, surrounded by nothing but frozen white stuff.

No action or activity to speak of because it’s too damn cold.

Brrrr!

As you can see, the harsh temperatures and blustery winds that pick up steam across the open fields are very hard on buildings and equipment.

But on a more positive note, the good news is that there’s only 9 more weeks until spring arrives 😉

    pretty snowy pictures. We hardly get snow here in the piedmont of North Carolina. If ever get snow, everything shuts down.

    I appreciate the beauty of this post. I live in the city, not the burbs, but not downtown, My area is dense in schools and parks. I am about 20 minutes from skyscrapers and farms alike. I seldom visit the country in the winter. These beautiful barns are a rare sight for me and I love them all, maybe especially the house with its happy trim — all of them in the midst of great white 🙂

    Thank you for doing errands on such a cold day because these are magnificent doors and buildings. I’ve almost never seen a barn I didn’t love, so I really enjoyed this post, Norm. The last photo reminds me of the New England farms when a road divided the house and the barn so suddenly the farmer was crossing a two-lane highway to get to his barn and equipment.     There is a distinct feeling of stillness in the photos, like everyone is migrating or hibernating for the winter. Poignant and lovely at the same time.

    Brrr! I feel cold just looking at these wintry scenes! The photos have a stark beauty, though. In the third photo, the door resembles a face! 😉

    You sure have captured just how bleak the Winter is Norm – thanks for sharing how many more weeks until Spring. We’ve had a mild Winter here in SE Michigan but a snow and ice storm is looming nearby to shake things up a little bit.

    Happy New Year Norm! Your third photo of the white barn, outlined in red and nestled in snow, is so beautiful. I am completely envious of your winter wonderland…I know, I know! Perhaps not the subzero temps, but the snow, YES. Unseasonable warmth here on the east coast leaves me uninspired.

    Most of these structures look desolate and abandoned by the cold – also by the lack of greenery around -, except the house with the yellow door, that has (to me) more the character of a soldier braving the cold. Maybe because of the sunny yellow door. The storm going on here, must be tropical, comparatively. Hope for warmer days for you!

    Oooo, you are most welcome to keep your -15 or better, share it in this way only. In a way, I’m relieved to learn such a cold still exists. It does look very serene and quiet.

    I have a couple of friends to celebrate today and what better way to do it than with doors? All the rest can study Slovenian door culture along the way. And the open-door castle policy!

    You caught the desolate feel of winter on the farm perfectly, Norm. My favorite is that last shot. Winter is hardest on the farmers and their families, who have to go out no matter the weather to take care of chores and animals that still need attention. They don’t get nearly enough recognition for their hard work and low pay.

    Where you live sounds like where we live: city access if needed/wanted, open country not far away. We were in Chicago itself recently and found doors we’d never see in the country!

      Thanks Janet. My hat goes off to the people who grow our food. It’s extremely hard work, not always a profitable business, and so much is out of your control that you can’t help but spend most of your time worrying about something. I know I couldn’t do it, but I sure appreciate those that do 🙂

    After reading this week that the west is experiencing temps of minus 40, I thought hey minus 15 doesn’t sound too bad. But then I checked myself and realized that minus anything is bad. 😁

      Thanks Deb. As I was writing this post I was thinking the same thing about the deep freeze out west. We’re lucky, so far it looks like it won’t be as bad when that weather system works its way east.

    Great doors! I love that barn with red trim, so you can see the doors even in a blizzard. And the house, with the bright trim (looks turquoise to me, but it’s in my blue/green colorblind range, so I dunno). Pretty, anyway.     Oh, that’s cold, Norm. I hope you got those photos from inside a warm car. Farms do look desolate in the winter. It’s nice to consider that everything will be ready to roll in the spring, but it’s hard to believe when it’s that cold.
