Thursday Doors – December 19, 2019

Thursday Doors is a weekly feature allowing door lovers to come together to admire and share their favorite door photos from around the world. Feel free to join in on the fun by creating your own Thursday Doors post each week and then sharing it, between Thursday morning and Saturday noon (North American eastern time), by using the blue link-up button below.

2019 Year-End Recap

I’ll be taking a blogging break over the holidays so there’ll be no Thursday Doors link-up for the next two Thursdays: December 26th and January 2nd.

Before we say goodbye and leave 2019 to the history books though, I thought it would be nice to take look back at some of my favourite doors posted throughout the year. For this exercise I tried narrowing it down to one choice for each month:

At the end of January the 2nd post of our day in Bolsena Italy included one of my favourite door subjects, what I call a ghost door. Essentially it’s a door that has been closed off but you can still see that a door used to be there. This one’s a classic example:

Around here February means the Dog Days of winter and with the snow accumulation we had last year I think I was looking for some sympathy with this snowy post that including our back patio door after a storm.

This pretty blue and white one on a modern-looking church in the Quebec City area got the nod as my favourite from March.

Most of April was covered by a 3-post extravaganza that explored the amazing doors of Massa Marittima. This composition was at the top of my list.

May was a five-Thursday-month so it was a bit of a tough call with so many doors to choose from. This image from west of downtown Montreal that features a corner door to an empty shop, wins with its eye-catching colour.

My favourite door in June was found on this stroll through an alleyway in the north end Villeray district. Who doesn’t love a good take-a-book-leave-a-book free lending library, am-I-right, or what?

My choice for July isn’t all that impressive on the attractiveness front, but for me the historical significance of Jackie Robinson’s door on de Gaspé St. beats anything else that I posted that month.

Another 5-Thursday month, August was also a bit of a tough choice. However this post from our visit to Upper Canada Village contains the door that for rather obvious reasons may well become our #ThursdayDoors mascot door 🙂

For obvious reasons I call this one the d’uh door 😉

My September pick is from St. Patrick’s Basilica in Ottawa.  We stumbled on this place quite by accident after a wrong turn took us down a street we hadn’t intended to take. After noticing this one while driving past, I just knew I had to circle back to get out and take a closer look. I’m glad I did because this one’s a beauty.

Despite being the month of Halloween, the scariest door I posted in October actually came from our visit to the Penitentiary Museum in Kingston, Ontario. Now if this one doesn’t scare you into staying on the right side of the law….

This beauty from Boldt Castle was my top door pic from November. It certainly has a very old European feel to it.

Since there were only two new posts in December I’ll just skip this month and instead include this lovely honorable mention, also from Upper Canada Village.

Well that’s all folks. It was another good year for door discoveries and I feel truly blessed to have so many wonderful friends who join me each week for this quirky obsession of ours. Thank you all so very much 🙂

Whatever you celebrate at this time of year I wish you all Happy Holidays, much health and happiness, and many wonderful doorscursions for 2020!

I can’t wait to see everyone else’s year-end recaps too, so hopefully you’ll have accepted my invitation to do the same.

Please don’t forget to add your link in the comments section below so we can all head over and see what you have to share.

If you promote your blog posts on social media then using the #ThursdayDoors hashtag will also make it easier for others find you. And most importantly of all please do take a few minutes to visit some of the Thursday Door posts shared by our other contributors.

Happy 2020! Lovely and unique and interesting doors all around, Norm! I love the tiny library. April’s is my favorite, though.

To a new year of doors!

  3. I hope you enjoy your holidays and your time off! I am so excited about the concept of the ghost door that I will for sure be looking for them in the future. These are all excellent doors, and I don’t think I could choose favourites. Maybe the scary door, the Duh Door, and the green fabulous St. Patricks Basilica door that is a wild collection of stones that somehow remain symmetrical, and I am crazy about the Massa Marittima door….oh, like I said, I can’t choose a fave. Thank you for them all. Have a wonderful wonderful 2020.

The little street library is truly adorable, but the November door looks like it has all the stories! 😉
This year has quite gotten away from me, but I’m hoping to get back on the Thursday Doors circuit next year – I’ve still been collecting plenty of door photos! It seems one can take Thursday Doors from a blog, but it never leaves the blogger.

All the best for the New Year, Norm 🙂

  10. April, September, and November, Norm. But you had so many good ones that it had to be difficult to choose. Thanks so much for being our host. I love this challenge.

As you already know, I ran short of time, so I have a cheat post this morning or at least I have metaphorical, rather than physical, doors. But I know you don’t mind (at least too much.)

    Thursday doors…doors to the past

Merry, merry Christmas and happy New Year. See you in 2020.

  11. What a fabulous collection! Maybe because my Thursday Doors post features grand doors, I have to pick the one from St. Patrick’s Basilica and Massa Marittima as my favorites.

And thank you for the reminder to do the compilation. I almost forgot and you know how much I love them. Here it is, with proverbial 33 photos. 😀 Happy holidays!

I remember each of these and they were all excellent choices for favourites of the year. You had another banner year for excellent door finds … although I give you bonus points for the DOOR door 😆

Merry Christmas, Norm, with extra hugs for Louise. I hope your holidays are fun-filled, interspersed with relaxation. May the new year be kind and generous to you … except with the snow. No generosity required there 🙂

  25. Great selection for the year Norm. I love that colourful corner door. Sorry, just a normal Thursday Doors post from me as my computer died and going through the archives on my phone is too difficult (it’s obviously smarter than I am). I’m not sure how you narrowed it down to one a month, Norm. I was thinking more of a Top-40 for your doors. You made some great choices. I hope this February gives you the opportunity to get out from behind that door.

Thanks so much for hosting Thursday Doors. I enjoy gathering, posting and visiting as many doors as I can through this blog. If I don’t “see” you out and about, hsvdd Ed s wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Thank you Dan. It wasn’t easy cutting it down to one door per month and I’m sure if I went back and took another look I might change my mind yet again on a few of them 😀
I guess that just means it was a good year for doors. All the best to you my friend – see you in 2020 🙂

  28. What a wonderful selection, Norm. All are favourites. I decided not to do a “Best of 2019” Door post. Instead I am starting a dozen posts of doors from Budapest. https://drprunesquallor279704606.wordpress.com/2019/12/19/thursday-doors-budapest-1/

  29. Nice round up. I remember several of them, particularly the well-labeled door. That should stand up as the door of the decade or something.

Thank you. Yes the “door” door is one of my all-time favourites. I really want to find a way to feature that one as a regular header or badge or something. Gonna take some time over the break to look into that. Cheers!
