Christmas Markets, Joliette & Terrebonne, Quebec
Before getting started just a quick reminder that I’ll be taking a blogging break for the holidays. The last Thursday Doors post for 2019 will be next week December 19th. For this last post of 2019 I’ll be doing a year-end review of my favourite doors posted 2019, and I encourage you to do the same 🙂
After a 2-week break, we’ll be back in the New Year with a fresh new post to start the New Year on January 9th, 2020.
The first market we checked out was a new one for us in the nearby town of Joliette.
Santa’s place!!!!
It was smaller than we expected and sadly Santa wasn’t in when we got there 😦
I already mailed my letter to Santa a while ago so I didn’t need to leave him a note
The local merchants who exhibit at these markets offer a wide variety of arts and craft type items along with lots of delicious treats.
Never mind the maple syrup products and have a look at this lovely door!
The whole tour of the Joliette market took less than 15 minutes but it did afford us the chance to check out some of the old historic properties in the centre of town.
This one has been turned into a fancy restaurant. Judging by what we saw on the menu, we’re going to be going back there…hopefully soon :-p
The next day we checked out the market on Ile des Moulins in Vieux Terrebonne, much closer to home.
This market is bigger and they go all out with carolers in period costumes.
And there’s a much bigger selection of merchants and goodies to choose from.
The fun colours of some of these kiosks really stand out against the snow.

I loved the holiday cheer in your photos of the two Christmas markets. So joyful and colorful, especially the purple, pink, yellow, and red stalls. The carrollers and decorations made me smile. I went to the Christmas market here. It was nice, but not as festive as these. Thanks, Norm, for sharing!

Very festive! Thanks for the heads up for the break Norm. I haven’t done this week yet and I missed last week, but maybe I can dig through my phone to see if it has some doors left. I’m still on crutches so not going out much…
I’ll join either this week, or make SURE I’ll have something for next week. I don”t think I have enough doors yet for a year’s review though.

Wonderful doors, and venues! I love reenactors and wonderful they look. My favorite of this collection is that white colonial house. WOW! Love that one.

It’s hard to believe the year is almost over, isn’t it? We literally went from fire to flood here in California and now it is foggy and damp. The good thing about dressing in period costumes is they’re probably warmer! I love the tiny yellow shack! I will be quite busy the next few weeks as well but I will try to pull together my fav doors. Happy Holidays!

I like christmas markets in the snow. It’s not something I get a lot of, so every photo is welcome.

I love the bright colors on the kiosks at the second market. I do enjoy Christmas markets and that tradition has been around for a very long time. Just look at the European markets.
My doors are from France again this week, although I’m still in the US. 🙂 We spent Thanksgiving in Philadelphia and will be at home for Christmas. We also have a very small dusting of snow, just enough to look at bit festive and mentally counteract the cold (maybe.)

Your doors are timely and make me want to do one important thing: shop, of course! I love Christmas markets, and I’ve only been to a few. But I would gladly go again to Bath, England, or Paris, France to purchase something handmade for my family. Thanks for posting, Norm!

We usually don’t spend much over the holidays but these markets are great to discover what local craftspeople are up to, and it’s a good way to get into the spirit of the season.

Oh, the festivity! I believe I could stroll happily around a Christmas market, if I had boots like those carolers have. And some quilted long-johns. And a hat with ear flaps. And a wooly muffler that covers my entire neck and face. And heated mittens. Yeah, I’ll just stay here in the car with the motor running; you take pictures for me. I wouldn’t define small-town markets that support local artists and craftspeople and help keep money in their own local community as “cloying commercialism”.
The way I see it we all spend some money over the holidays, and hopefully within reason and within our means, so why not spend it with someone local who makes things with their own hands, rather than doing business with some faceless corporate behemoth?

I do enjoy these Christmas markets – especially when the weather is cooperative and I’m not risking frost bite 😉
I think this is the first time I’ve seen one with a big outdoor fire. I imagine it to be a great place to have a conversation with a hot beverage in hand.

Thanks Joanne. Most of the markets we have here include some sort of a fire pit to give folks a place to keep warm. A nice hot chocolate, or hot something, just adds to the experience.

Well I do agree with the idea that leaving people feeling harried and pressured into spending money is not in keeping with the true Christmas spirit. However, most of these markets encourage small local businesses and help keep money within their respective communities. If you’re going to be spending anyways, then much better that than ordering something online from a ginornous faceless corporation.
