Thursday Doors – October 10, 2019

Exploring Outremont, Montréal, Québec

Last weekend I was out exploring for the annual Scott Kelby worldwide photo walk which is a pretty cool event for photography buffs looking to expand their horizons, meet like-minded people, and discover parts of their local community.

There were a number of walks organized in the Montréal area and the one I chose was in a part of town I don’t visit very often, the borough of Outremont.

Located north of downtown on the north-east flank of Mount Royal, Outremont was one of several separate municipalities on the island of Montréal.

Seven doors in 1 shot!

After the forced municipal mergers of 2000 it is now one of the smallest buroughs in the greater Montréal community, but also one of the coolest.

It is an interesting mix of classy older residential streets with a healthy dose of trendy shops, cafés, and restaurants on its main thoroughfares.

Here are some of the interesting residential doors I found while out exploring the neighbourhood for a few hours on a lovely Saturday.

Is this the most creative idea for a mural, of what?

As you can see this part of Outremont contains mostly small apartment blocks, duplexes, and triplexes, many of which have been converted into condos.

The fun thing is that many of these building are well over 150 years-old and have unique designs and features that help set them apart from their neighbours.

A common thread with many of the is the use of those walk-up outdoor iron staircases, aka winter death-traps 😉

All in all it was a fruitful visit, and considering this was what I found on only 3 or 4 streets, I know I have to get back for a lot more exploration in the future.
