Exploring Outremont, Montréal, Québec
Last weekend I was out exploring for the annual Scott Kelby worldwide photo walk which is a pretty cool event for photography buffs looking to expand their horizons, meet like-minded people, and discover parts of their local community.
There were a number of walks organized in the Montréal area and the one I chose was in a part of town I don’t visit very often, the borough of Outremont.
Located north of downtown on the north-east flank of Mount Royal, Outremont was one of several separate municipalities on the island of Montréal.
After the forced municipal mergers of 2000 it is now one of the smallest buroughs in the greater Montréal community, but also one of the coolest.
It is an interesting mix of classy older residential streets with a healthy dose of trendy shops, cafés, and restaurants on its main thoroughfares.
Here are some of the interesting residential doors I found while out exploring the neighbourhood for a few hours on a lovely Saturday.
As you can see this part of Outremont contains mostly small apartment blocks, duplexes, and triplexes, many of which have been converted into condos.
The fun thing is that many of these building are well over 150 years-old and have unique designs and features that help set them apart from their neighbours.
A common thread with many of the is the use of those walk-up outdoor iron staircases, aka winter death-traps 😉
And some very pretty decorative elements as well.
All in all it was a fruitful visit, and considering this was what I found on only 3 or 4 streets, I know I have to get back for a lot more exploration in the future.
As always I thank you for dropping in 🙂

The 12th photo the moss looks like a huge monster. Love the hearts in the stairs.

Hi. I got this message when I tried to share this on Facebook with a niece who lives there. “Your message couldn’t be sent because it includes content that other people on Facebook have reported as abusive.”
I filled in a form to say I could find nothing abusive in this post.

Heck, when I tried to share this to my niece in Montreal, Facebook wouldn’t let me do it, said “Your message couldn’t be sent because it includes content that other people on Facebook have reported as abusive.”
Maybe you can get them to review the situation, I surely couldn’t find anything abusive!

Thanks for reaching out Yvonne and for the heads-up, and further follow-up, about the issue with the FB share button. I’ll keep an eye on the situation to see if it happens again.
Cheers!

Very unique and beautiful doors, Norm, in a quaint and cool area. So many great finds for a small section. Loved the mural!

So many doors, so little time … in the photo captioned “seven doors in one shot” … one balcony at the one window only intrigued me.

Thanks Linda. We saw lots of lovely little decorative stained glass windows in this area.

Gorgeous collection of doors- and I love all the brick! I also really like that tree mural… so very clever. We had a Scott Kelby worldwide photo walk here last weekend (in our extremely photogenic Balboa Park) but I had to miss is due to a prior commitment. Next year, I’m not going to let that happen again!

This year there were 3 walks on the island of Montreal and 2 more in the burbs just off the island. I’ve been wanting to do this for a few years but each year it seemed we were either away or too busy. This was the first time since I heard about it that we were actually available. It was a lot of fun.

Howdy, Norm. The wood and brick details on these doors are charming. I join Thursday Doors by way of following Dan Antion of No Facilities. I went over and commented on your post but WordPress always sends my first comment on someone’s blog into spam. You may need to go into the comments section of your WP admin dashboard, fish me out of the spam folder and flag me as “not spam”.
It was nice to see and read your take on one of my favorite places to visit. I hope you’ll join us again soon – cheers!

Yes, indeed, into spam it went. I flagged “not spam” but then the comment disappeared. Thanks for taking the extra time to respond; and look forward to seeing more doors.

Thanks Tara. It’s a very pretty area. These older places ALL have high ceilings, fancy old crown moldings, and lots of other decorative elements. One could do a lot worse than these places, that’s for sure.

Oh yes, now you’re talking. These are glorious 3 or 4 streets. I’d love to stroll there as well. I’d love to live in any of these, not just stroll. Looking forward to your next doorscursions in this area. And look, I found a hostel just for you to stay when you come to Ljubljana… 😉

What a delightful neighborhood to walk through. Would not mind living there, if it were not so much North (winter!). The mural on the last wall gives it an extra touch! Also love the view with the door down, and the neighbor upstairs. This neighborhood has a community feel:)

I honestly don’t think we have a French equivalent for “bucket list” but I’ll double check with my wife since it’s her first language and not mine.
Yes you should come for a visit. Smoked meat sandwiches, Montreal style bagels, poutine, maple syrup (not all at once of course!), and lots of break-neck staircases 😉

I think seven doors in one shot might just be a record! I was loving that yellow stained glass in the top picture, then I realized it was probably a reflection of fall foliage–Lovely. The Margaret Rose brought back fond memories: My mother often told me she used to have Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret Rose paper dolls when she was young. Thanks for the happy thought. 🙂 My offering this week is small: http://marianallen.com/2019/10/1816-again-thursdaydoors/

What a lovely neighbourhood!! .. and it looks like you had a perfect day for a walkabout. I love the photo of the building being swallowed by a vine wearing its fall colours 🙂
Montreal architecture is so unique compared to other parts of the country. Those outdoor ‘winter death traps’ still make me shake my head in wonderment.

Wow! These are great doors, Norm. You really delivered on your promise to bring us something more upbeat. I love the triplets, and the transoms. I also live the stairs but I can’t imagine the work involved in keeping them safe in the winter. The walk itself sounds like a great idea. I need to see if there are any around here.
