Butterflies, Dinosaurs, & Doors at the Canadian Museum of Nature – Ottawa, Ontario

This past long weekend we took a road trip to the nation’s capital Ottawa. While there we decided to drop in and visit a building we had driven past a number of times before, that had always caught my eye, The Canadian Museum of Nature.

Formerly known as The National Museum of Natural Sciences the main campus of the museum, the one we visited, is housed in the magnificent Victoria Memorial Museum Building.

The building’s architectural style is referred to as Scottish Baronial.

Basically it’s a mix of medieval castle and with symmetrical Gothic, Romanesque, and Tudor influences. It was built between 1905 and 1912 using locally quarried sandstone.

Despite the old world style, the building was one of the first of its kind to incorporate animals and plants found in Canada into its design.

Note the moose head, upper right

Only a few years after opening the building was called into service as the temporary/emergency home of Canada’s Parliament which was destroyed by fire in 1916. After the reconstructed Parliament re-opened in 1920 the building returned to its original vocation, undergoing several significant renovations over the years. The last renovations in 2010 included a stunning glass tower that houses a scale model of the moon.

As for me: a chance to stroll through a 100+ year old structure,

see some woolly mammoths and some dinosaurs,

dead ones of course…

check out the butterfly exhibit,

live ones of course…

and discover some lovely doors…

Inside the butterfly greenhouse

all on a lazy holiday Monday?

I’d say: It was my kinda day!

As always, thank you for looking 🙂

The beveled panels of glass in the doors, though, right? Swoon! The windows are everything here, and you had stained as well as the perfect sky for plain glass reflections. I, too, enjoy skeletal remains and butterflies. Thanks for sharing this gem 🙂

    Magnificent photos, Norm.
I’m desperately needing to get to sleep and will come back and read your post in more detail.
This week I revisited my parents first home, which was quite a renovation project and a way for them to get ahead, making a very encouraging story: https://beyondtheflow.wordpress.com/2019/09/08/the-great-australian-dream-thursday-doors/

  6. What an absolutely beautiful building! The doors and those stained glass windows are just gorgeous. And the pretty butterflies are a real treat! Coincidentally, yesterday I went to the La Brea Pit Tars Park and Museum in Los Angeles and saw mammoths, dire wolves, and other Ice Age creatures. It was a great discovery. Outstanding! I was fascinated to read your architectural description, because the museum looks very much like my junior high school building! I love all the details and the stained glass. And, of course, the arches. 🙂 Here’s my offering this week: http://marianallen.com/2019/09/asian-wok-and-friends-thursdaydoors/

  16. Wow! I’m so sorry the museum wasn’t our agenda when visiting Ottawa a few years ago. I need to rectify that! Love, love the moose heads (we never did see a real one while in Canada)! And the moon… holy cow, that’s gorgeous! Beautiful doors, for sure, but I think I got caught up with all the other visual treats… including the butterflies.

A magnificent building Norm! Beautiful on the outside as sell as on the inside. Love the look downstairs, and the stained glass has a remarkable signature style. That moon is huge! The butterflies are a worthy mention, and like the image with a butterfly on your shoulder:). A great post!

  25. Ooo, what a brilliant day you had! 🙂 A most excellent building and one butterfly shot looks so much like one of mine that I took at an exhibition as well. There were some dinosaurs there as well, but you win – the Moon, ohhhh, the moon! 😮 And the doors are extra beautiful!

Here are my doors from last September and one from this week. Visitors come and new arrive…

What a wonderful place to stroll, and look and learn. I love sandstone, and the marvelous things the craftsmen were able to with that wonderful material. The entrance is amazing, Norm, and the animals seem to fit so well into the architecture. I would love to see the scale model of the moon. I never knew there was one – anywhere. I love the view of the entrance looking down from inside. We all manage to find interesting doors, but you lead the pack in finding ways to present them – nicely done!

Oh my! I haven’t been to the Natural Sciences Museum since Before Children … and I had no idea they had changed the name! Nor do I remember it being such an outstanding old building. I particularly like the addition of indigenous plants and animals in the design. Very appropriate for a nature museum – live butterflies and all 🙂
