A new photo series I’m going to try for the rest of the summer.
One photo and a few words every Saturday of something interesting I find in our vegetable garden.
This week:
All on its own a tendril on a cucumber plant reaches out to latch onto a trellis and pull itself up, closer to the sun.
Now try telling me that Mother Nature isn’t fricken amazing!
Nature always wins! I don’t get enough sunlight for a garden but I love seeing Mother Nature work her magic in my yard. 🙂

Ooh, yeah, that’s the stuff! It’s all a miracle, just amazing what the earth can do 🙂

There’s nothing like finding amazing photos in your own backyard, Norm! Plants are smart, aren’t they?

They are indeed. Thanks Terri 🙂

… and have you ever tried unwrapping those little corkscrews once they’ve worked their way onto something? Yikes.
Nature is awesome. Which is why I look at all the weeds in my yard and acknowledge I don’t stand a chance.

Thanks Joanne. Weeds are a whole other challenge aren’t they? I’m still learning to make peace with them myself 😉

And, they probably all twine either clockwise or anti-ditto, depending on the species and hemisphere!

Thanks Yvonne. I had not thought about it, but you bring up an excellent point, they probably do that.

That is tenacity – climbing toward the sun (when you can find it!) My neighbor planted cucumbers a few years ago and they climbed up and over the fence and in a matter of weeks, covered my small cottoneaster. I thought cukes were annuals, but he didn’t plant them last or this year and they are back, up and over the fence and over here.

Thanks Linda. Hmm interesting. I had not heard of a variety of cukes that comes back without replanting. The winter snow and freezing temps kill them off completely around here.

We had some brutal temps here too Norm – we got to -45 F (-42 C) wind chill during the Polar Vortex. My roses are still trying to rally back from that … I know he has not planted them again – he told me last year he had no time, unless he had a change of heart. I will ask. I was amazed when I saw them trailing over the top again.

These are the tiny details that make me realise how perfectly adapted life-forms can be. I love the shot, and the series idea.

We have grape vines in the backyard that do the same. It’s such a shame to have to trim them but they become entwined in just about everything – including trying to suffocate the pear tree.

Vines are notorious for their competitive will to overtake everything around them 🙂

She sure does Dan and I can’t help but marvel at it 🙂

That IS amazing, Norm, how the tendril wrapped itself around the fence. I had a morning glory one year that didn’t bloom, but it sure entangled it’s leads in the trellis. Here’s hoping for juicy summer cucumbers before the end of summer.

What a lovely photo and idea. Simple is best. I’ve come to believe that is true the longer I keep a blog.

Yes indeed. We’re very lucky to have a big enough back yard for a vegetable garden. Aside from photography it’s one of my favourite hobbies.

I have a house plant that does the same sort of thing. Absolutely cool and amazing.
