Thursday Doors – June 21, 2018

Montreal Mural Fest 2018 (Oh yeah, and a few doors too) 

I’ll be the first to point out that I’m kinda cheating at my own game this week because there are not that many doors in this post.

We took some time last Friday afternoon to head down to the sixth annual edition of the Montreal Mural Festival and I got so carried away with the artwork that I forgot to get enough good pics of doors 😀

Each year about a 3 km stretch of St-Laurent is closed to traffic for the 10 days of the festival. Heading north from the edge of downtown towards Plateau Mont Royal is where the bulk of the murals can be found.

Overall it’s a part of town that contains an interesting mix of shops, restaurants, and apartments. This thrift shop/gift shop/head shop is certainly one example of that.

It’s also nice to see that some folks above the shop have a twisted sense of humor.

Dammit Michael – Bring that baby in before you drop him!

For anyone planning to visit there’s an interactive map on the festival website showing exactly where everything is. Building owners who commit one of their walls to the festival sign an agreement not to paint over the art for at least one year. And many of the top ones are left for much longer, only painted over when they start to peel.

A little context: this one is directly across the street from an apartment high-rise with lots and lots of windows

The bulk of it can be seen on foot in one 3-4 hour walk, but each year new buildings take part so with more to see it’s getting harder to get to it all in one visit.

We took advantage of a free guided tour offered by one of the events sponsors. Well it wasn’t totally free; we had to provide the pedal power for our bicycle bus 😉

Our guide did a good job of explaining the different techniques used by the renowned artists who come from all over the planet each year for this event.

Personally I blame this distraction for my not paying enough attention to doors, and believe me on the residential streets in this part of town there are some beautiful doors.

Some major renos going on here but put a nice piece of stained glass in this one and you’ve got a winner.

I’ve been posting my mural shots on Instagram all week so if you follow me there some of these might look familiar.

It’s not all art and beauty though. Like any big city there are some eyesores that need to be dealt with.

And some run of the mill industrial blandness too.

We finished up and went for a bite just as the light was fading.

The Montreal Mural festival runs for ten days covering two weekends in mid June. And even if you don’t make it for the actual festival the murals can be enjoyed all year long.
