Everything Looks Prettier in the Snow – Vieux Terrebonne Part 1

Keeping it close to home this week, it was a perfectly mild, snowy day, ideal for a doorscursion around the historical old section of Terrebonne.

In case you’re wondering, Terrebonne lies directly off the northeastern tip of Laval, just north of Montreal on a section of the Milles-Iles River.

With a population of close to 115,000 Terrebonne is the largest city in the Lanaudiere region of the Province of Quebec and the tenth largest city overall within the province.

The first French settlements in the area date back to the 1670’s and parts of Vieux (Old) Terrebonne contain some of the best preserved heritage buildings in the province.

Take a stroll through Vieux Terrebonne and you’ll find some wonderful examples of 18th and 19th century Québecois architecture.

Everything looks prettier surrounded by falling snow, don’t ya think?

You’ ll find a number of lovely old stone buildings

Even the iron fence surrounding the old seminary school is worth stopping to admire.

And on the more modern buildings you’ll find examples of our world-famous break-your-neck outdoor iron staircases 😉

We’ve got even more snow and mild temps in the forecast for the next few days. Time to grab the camera and head out for more 🙂

As always, thanks so much for visiting 🙂

  9. Amazing doors, Norm, and the snow just adds to the texture. 🙂 Glad you are feeling better and are up and around. I’m taking my turn with a cold/sinus right now. 🙂

  10. So that’s what snow falling from the sky looks like! Lovely doors, but holy cow… people actually get out and about in that weather?

I guess it’s not as bad as it looks, especially if you’re used to it. Everything just takes a little longer and requires planning ahead, but yeah, except for the really bad stormy days when it’s best to stay indoors, life just sort of keeps going 🙂

Norm, we are in the Eastern Towships & cannot believe the snow that has fallen in the last week. I think it is something like 109cm on the mountain 😲⛷❄️☃️🇨🇦

The Townships are gorgeous in winter – enjoy.
I’ve heard it has been close to record snowfalls there this winter. The skiing/snowboarding must be great 🙂

You are so right Norm…everything DOES look prettier in the snow. However, I’m sure those buildings look wonderful at all times. My favorite mix is the yellow and burgundy. I don’t know if it’s because of the snow enhancement or the use of two colors, but it sure stands out. Thanks for the beautiful roundup! 🙂

The snow makes it look like I’m finding myself in a story! The reality is of course all the work that comes with it, although in a small town or city it’s more enjoyable than in a big one! The brick with the black trimmed windows and doors becomes so stately as well as the iron fence – beauitul!

There are too many fabulous posts for me to possibly review them all before a trip to Montreal. You don’t just introduce us to beautiful doors, but places I’ve never heard of, and history I don’t know.

Thanks Dan. It was actually quite enjoyable to be out in these conditions, especially with the mild temps, just below freezing. The world is a much different place all covered in white. We had lots of fun 🙂

I want to live at 273. I love the ironwork on that door and the dark metal handle that coordinates with it. However, all your door photos are spectacular and make a snowy day look quaint and inviting.

As if the architecture with the infamous break-your-neck outdoor staircases weren’t enough to highlight this was Quebec, you had to toss in falling snow as an exclamation mark 🙂
My favourite photo isn’t of a door at all, but the fence line. I love the way it captures that snowy day.

What surprised me though was the size of Terrebonne. I had to check the route of the TransCanada Trail and it does include Terrebonne, so eventually I’ll get to experience it – hopefully sans neige 🙂 Is it considered part of Montreal, or a separate city?

    • Norm 2.0 says:

Thanks Joanne. I would not be surprised to find out our main bike trail The Trans-Terrebonne is part of the TCT.
Officially it’s a completely separate municipality. We have our own elected city council, mayor, and police force. Though it does get lumped into the “Greater Montreal” region it is still an autonomous city.

These were such pretty snow covered doors and scenes, Norm!
Red, brick red and the deeper red doors are such attractive ones in contrast to the honey colored stones. Those brighter reds stood out in a unique way!

  33. Too cool. We are having a prolonged cold winter in UK this year. Snow is not my preferred element. But you have captured it well in front of the doors. BTW I am still having problems posting – maybe I should take it down and try again? I am not able to find the proper URL, and instead I seem to post the actual site. Help!
