First Baptist Church – Downtown Ottawa

I’m hoping for good weather this weekend in the Montreal area because I am in desperate need of more doors.

In the meantime here are the last of my doors from our latest visit to our nation’s capital last month.

Located at 140 Laurier Avenue West across from Centennial park and only a five-minute walk from the parliament buildings, the First Baptist Church is one of many heritage buildings in downtown Ottawa.

nsc_1747

Designed by architect James Mather, construction began in 1877 with then Prime Minister Alexander Mackenzie laying the cornerstone.

With construction completed in 1878 Mackenzie who was Canada’s second Prime Minister is said to have been a frequent worshiper there whenever he was in Ottawa.

The church was expanded in 1916, and then underwent major modernization renovations in 1928. It was given further renovations in 1966-67 for Canada’s centennial, and a large pipe organ was installed from the master organ builders Casavant Freres of St-Hyacinthe, Québec.

Dear Norm, I apologise my first post had my own WordPress account link. Well, it did seem easy too easy to put it in. 🙂 I changed it at 5:18, but am so sorry. Have a wonderful Thursday and weekend. Sincerely yours, Robin

The last Quebec doors set was very beautiful and special in its quality. I liked the collection of snowy scenery shots, Norm. 🙂
I ran out of doors, so have been reading other door posts over the weekend. I had a foot accident at my warehouse job and went to get xrays and am on “light duty” but no broken bones. I took the girl grandies to the. Art gallery for special needs adults and managed to get one ready for this coming Thursday. Have a great week!

  9. Handsome doors, but I’m guessing those snow banks are why all those Canadian folks are still in South Carolina. 🙂

  10. I like the symmetry of those main doors 🙂 And the stone work and glass is amazing too! Hope you get some better weather soon.

In California we think 2 inches of snow (which fell this week) is a big deal – am smiling when I see your images! As long as you are able to find more than one door (aka Jesh’s posts!) you’re good:):) Here in the South the Baptists churches look different – not the height of the one you’re shown, and the main entrance is not this luxurious looking and beautiful looking door.

I have a friend who has a cabin in the mountains near Truckee and I’ve seen some pics in winter – snow up to the roof line! California has places that get snow too 😀

  12. That last shot is a beauty, Norm. We didn’t get any snow here this winter but it’s been windy and cold today so one never knows……………….

Thanks Jean, I think we must have gotten you snow this winter. Most of it didn’t come until after the holidays but it has been an above average winter for snow accumulation this year – in fact we had to go up to clear the roof twice so far.

Love the last two shots, the blue wooden doors and the warm wooden ones with wreaths AND and open sign. That’s a welcoming entrance to such a grand building!

I don’t get tired of reading about and looking at beautiful church doors, but I suppose I do like variations in my own posts, so I can’t blame you.
It’s supposed to be 66 and sunny here tomorrow. I’ve recruited Sadie, Sassy, and Master Boombastic. Moo’s holdin out to see if The Mister will join us.

I have some nice Montebello pics from a previous trip but never got the front door either.
Business is building up slowly, thanks for asking. I am loving my daily commute though: from the coffee machine to my desk in the downstairs home office every morning in 11 seconds flat 😉

I guess it’s fitting that as I read this post with all its snow, it’s snowing lightly here. That’s an unhappy transition from the warm weather we’ve been having.

Another lovely church, Norm. I’m a little surprised because I wouldn’t have associated such an imposing looking building as Baptist. I guess I’m guilty of a preconceived idea that Baptist churches were much more modest structures. Learn something new everyday!

  18. Love seeing these doors . . . and also the snow. We rarely get so much that we have to scrape walkways and pile up the snow on the sides.

Until last weeks thaw and rain which washed a lot of it away, we had over 4 feet of the white stuff on our lawn. At this time of year every driveway on our street is a blind entrance.

Love that stonework, and those beautiful golden brown doors. That’s a church that looks like it can stand the test of time.

  20. I like the first and last shots, Norm, as the warm color of the door contrasts well with the cool look of the stone. I love stone churches and this one is a beauty. Thanks, as always, for hosting one of the most enjoyable challenges out there.

Thanks Vicky. For the last week of so we had above freezing temps and rain that washed away a lot of snow, but we’re back into the minus teens Celsius today and more snow in the forecast for next week. Looks like we’re not quite done yet 🙂

I love the high steep arches above the doors and windows. Of course, I love stone buildings and wonderful doors. The little wooden roof over what I assume is a side door, looks like it needs a little TLC, but overall, this is a wonderful building, Norm. I am somewhat amazed that the construction was completed so quickly. Those guys must have been moved by the spirit of their work.

Snow and oak. That’s what I will think of when anyone mentions Montreal. Up to your normal high standards, Norm. I have more Delhi wrecks with a bit of stuff happening in and around the doors.
