Thursday Doors – March 2, 2017

First Baptist Church – Downtown Ottawa

I’m hoping for good weather this weekend in the Montreal area because I am in desperate need of more doors.

In the meantime here are the last of my doors from our latest visit to our nation’s capital last month.

Located at 140 Laurier Avenue West across from Centennial park and only a five-minute walk from the parliament buildings, the First Baptist Church is one of many heritage buildings in downtown Ottawa.

Designed by architect James Mather, construction began in 1877 with then Prime Minister Alexander Mackenzie laying the cornerstone.

With construction completed in 1878 Mackenzie who was Canada’s second Prime Minister is said to have been a frequent worshiper there whenever he was in Ottawa.

The church was expanded in 1916, and then underwent major modernization renovations in 1928. It was given further renovations in 1966-67 for Canada’s centennial, and a large pipe organ was installed from the master organ builders Casavant Freres of St-Hyacinthe, Québec.
