Green Doors Galore – Centenary United Church, Stanstead Quebec
There’s no nice way to put it; we’re into the crappy dog days of winter.
The grey dreary weather that alternates between freezing rain with unseasonably warm temps and then switching to heavy snow, followed by deep freezes is starting to wear down spirits around here.
If they haven’t already, in another few weeks most people in south western Quebec will be dreaming longingly of spring.
Of course spring will arrive…eventually. But in the meantime I desperately need a break from winter, so this week I dip into my archives for these shots from last summer during our time in Stanstead, in the Eastern Townships south east of Montreal.
The congregation that became Centenary United Church was established in Stanstead in 1804. The current structure was originally built between 1866 and 1869, and then rebuilt in 1883 using the original exterior walls after a fire destroyed the interior and the roof.
When we drove past this place I remember being immediately attracted to the old stone walls. This along with the bell tower with the clock in it made me want to circle back and take a closer look.
Upon closer inspection what I loved most was how the green doors and trim really worked well on this building.
So I did the full once-around and found several beauties worth sharing.
Right now the best thing about these shots is that they bring back pleasant memories of warm sunny weather.
So how many days left until spring? 😀
Thanks for stopping by.

A great gallery of beautiful green doors! They go very well with the old church. Wonderful photos, Norm. Wishing you a great weekend.

Put a clock on a building and it’s going to get full points from me! Add green doors and it’s bonus time … especially the 3rd one with the ramp and the 2 side windows. LOVE!
You have a new photo on your blog. Nice. You look all grown up and professional 🙂

Green is sometimes cast as the color of envy but I really don’t envy those that have to live in the snow. Visiting places that have snow in their climates is nice but living in the snow has my empathy and I hope spring comes quickly to you.
The green doors that you captured in that church was also inspring; simple designs set in a stone (beautiful) church warms up the building and offers welcome to all visitors. Hoping these warm words from sunny California brings you an early spring (somebody, lockup groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, for Norm!). 😉

Stone churches are the most special ones, Norm. The gray color of rugged cut stone just makes me feel it is homey. I liked the door frame and green doors! Thanks for being a gracious host and friend. Happy winter time, but missing the cheery summer. . . 🙂

Oohhh ooohh oooh. I really like the stone and green combination. And the shape of the doors and windows are so interesting! A nice spring reminder. Good luck with the cold there!

I absolutely LOVE the green doors. It was also a great break to see some summer shots. Hopefully they will help to bring on good weather (very soon)!

Thanks Donna. Around here we should be good for one or two more cold snaps before the weather turns for the better, but hopefully soon *fingers crossed* 😀

Beautiful stone in that church. That shot of the wooden walkway leading to the arched green door and stained glass windows is my favourite, Norm. Nice to see a bit of summer sun, too, at this time of year.

Thanks Jean. I was thinking that walkway was a wheelchair ramp but both it and that door seem a little too narrow…though it’s my favourite too 🙂

Green! Such a nice break from the usual red. And this was a nice reprieve from gloomy winter days.

Love the building style of this church, as well as narrow doors – maybe because they remind me on Holland, where doors in general are more narrow (and everything else in buildings as well, lol!)

I know what you mean. When I was preparing the post I remember thinking that the narrow one looked very European 🙂

We’ve had a lot of rain out here in California but today the sun is out and the daffodils are starting to sprout so maybe it won’t be too long.

It can’t get here soon enough as far as I’m concerned. I swear, the older I get the less patience I have for winter weather beyond mid-January 😉

Thanks – not something we see often. It seems either red or natural wood are the most common choices.

Those are great green doors. The green grass is awfully nice, too, and those green-trimmed windows are pretty dreamy. I love the big circular window! Also, it’s nice to see that big blue sky. 🙂

Thanks Joey. I’m looking out at well over 2 feet of snow on our lawn so yes, green grass is awfully nice 😀

So many beautiful churches in Canada. Are Canadians people of faith?

Thanks Andrea.
I don’t think Canadians are any more or less religious than people in most other developed countries.
I just happen to find lots of nice doors in these places so they end up in my posts fairly often 🙂

Thanks Deborah. I captured a LOT of churches on that trip ad for a while last summer it seemed to be the only theme to my post, so I wanted to set a few aside; for a cold and snowy day 😉

Great collection of lovely Green doors. The weather in my part of the UK has been mostly dull and Grey, so it is good to see the blue skies in your photographs. :>)

Handsome green doors. I like the way the pieces of wood used to create them were angled. Nice. The bonus here is the color of green always makes me think of grass and summer. 🙂 Norm, I couldn’t count the number of people wintering in SC from CN. My husband is actually playing on a golf team of four, and the other three guys are from CN. 🙂

Thanks Judy. Glad you liked these. Yes, I hear that area is quite popular with Canadian snowbirds. I’ve known a few acquaintances who go down for the golf just about every winter.

Green doors, but mine are blue this week, Norm. I like the heart on the first door. I am back in Delhi but am still posting doors from Manipur. BTW do you allow photographs of doors in artwork? Regards, Ian

Thanks Ian – I thought that heart was cute.
Yes, doors in artwork, sketches of doors, descriptions of doors, as long as doors is the promary theme it’s all good by me 🙂

I think you could create a sub-section of Thursday Doors for Church doors that were rebuilt after being destroyed by fire. I read and write that description so many times for churches in the 1800s.
I love the narrow little doors. The ramp could use some TLC, but the entrance is beautiful. I think my favorite is the last set of arched doors. I like the sharp peak to the arch and the way it is set back in the stone. Great choice for a mid-winter break, Norm.

Thanks Dan. I know so many places that went through this. Who would’ve thought that building with wood could turn out this way 😉

That is a rather pleasing green, even on the doors with faded paint.
