Lest We Forget

In Canada as well as in other British Commonwealth countries today is Remembrance Day – in the United States it is called Veteran’s Day.

No matter where you live or what you call it, November 11th, the anniversary of the armistice that officially ended World War I, is the day that many of us stop to pay tribute to all those who served and sacrificed on our behalf.

This year I thought I’d share this silent tribute in the form of a television ad from our major national telecom supplier Bell Canada. The ad which also ran last year at this time is a modern take on connecting with the past and though not a word is spoken, this one gets me choked up every single time.

My fellow Canadians on here have surely all seen this before, but for anyone who hasn’t, well, get the tissues ready:

    When I was a child my parents were almost obsessive about all of us wearing a red poppy on what my father referred to as Armistice Day. Now I rarely see a red poppy for sale. This film, however, might even be a better reminder of the sacrifices.

    At first I was kind of grumpy, like maybe that girl should get off her phone and talk to her mother. Haha…but then when the dude took the pressed poppy out of the envelope, it was Niagara fall over here.

    This was so poignant, Norm. I admire, respect and honor those who serve their countries. I am touched by stories, moved by films and cannot believe the sacrifices people willingly give in this service.
