Here are my answers to Cee’s Share Your World questions for week 43.
What are you really glad you did yesterday?
I spent a good part of my Sunday outside being constructive, doing repairs and tying things up getting the house ready for winter.
I still need to trim back the raspberry bushes, check and clean out the gutters, and we’re waiting for the last of the leaves to fall to start raking those up.
Yesterday was a good start, though. Weather permitting hopefully everything else will be done next weekend.
Would you prefer a one floor house or multiple levels?
Our house is on two levels; the main floor and a finished basement. We split our time fairly evenly between the two levels, and at least for the moment, it works well for us.
I really don’t find the stairs to be a burden at this point so as long as my heart failure doesn’t get any worse, I don’t think we’ll need to move into a one level home.
Have you done something you truly want to do today?
Nothing special really. We tried a delicious new chicken recipe for supper with a yummy baby spinach, apple, and red onion salad. Does that count?
What plans did you have as a teenager that didn’t happen? Are you happy it didn’t work out that way?
I really didn’t have any concrete plans at that age. Dreams perhaps, but not realistic ones, and certainly no plans on how I was going to achieve them. I guess you could say it took me a while to figure out my path.
At one point in high school I thought there was a chance I might become a professional football player. I was pretty good, with above-average speed and even better instincts. During the two years I played I received a few letters from some U.S. colleges inviting me down to their summer recruitment camps.
After quitting football at sixteen I threw myself into tennis. I played a lot of local school, city, and provincial tournaments, having more success in doubles than in singles.
For some reason I kept the unrealistic dream alive until my mid-twenties that I could make a living playing. Despite holding down a full time job to pay the bills AND by then being a full time smoker (!), I’d still go off to try to qualify whenever a satellite circuit tournament was held anywhere within a days drive.
So this was 26-year-old me in 1990 at the Casio Open at the National Tennis Centre in Toronto.
If I don’t look thrilled it’s because I’d just had my ass kicked 6-0, 6-2 by someone ten years younger than me 😦
I may not have realized it at the time but going all the way to Toronto with my doubles partner to get stomped in both singles and doubles was exactly what I needed to get my head out of the clouds and start making serious, more realistic plans for my future.
Looking back now I know I wasn’t good enough anyway so I’d say that it all turned out okay in the end.
Bonus question: What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?
Last week was pretty relaxing and uneventful, which was a nice change from the few weeks previous which were fun but very hectic.
This week I head back to school, slowly chipping away at that diploma in photography I’ve been working on. The course I’ll be taking this semester is Portrait Photography. Not exactly one of my favourite subjects. I’m looking forward to it because it will be good to force myself out of my usual routine of landscapes and architecture shots and extend beyond my comfort zone.
Many thanks to Cee for running this challenge. If you haven’t played along yet, you might want to give it a try – it’s a lot of fun.
Lovely post! 🙂

I didn’t know you were taking your diploma in Photography. Have you mentioned it before? How far along are you in the program?
I was never competitively good at any sport so I can’t relate to the tennis thing. I tried tennis a few times. I got tired of playing “gopher” … as in go-for the ball, which by this point has bounced well off the court.

I’m about half way through the Photography program. If all goes well, at a rate of one course per session I’ll be done by spring 2018. I’m not in any major rush.
Though photography does make up a small part of what I do for a living, this is more for personal interest/passion than professional advancement.
Tennis ball go-fers are essential – they help speed up the flow of the game 😉

ha! The game is definitely not flowing well when the go-fer is one of the players who is more likely to be hit by the ball rather than return it to the server

There was a brief time when I wanted to play tennis too. I took summer lessons when I was 12 or 13 and did really good. Was fairly good at school. My mom who wasn’t a real nice person, hooked me up with a semi-tennis pro from Japan. We play…rather I saw the balls soar by me. We went to the beach instead and became rather good friends. She was about 7 years older than I. I taught her a bunch of American Slang that day.

Come on now Cee fess up: did you teach her ‘slang’ or swear words?
I only ask because I know from my own experiences at that age with folks from different languages and cultures, the naughty words were always the first ones I’d teach them. Okay, well maybe that’s just me….

Hee hee, so fun to read of your tennis past! Tennis was quite big in the 80’s and 90’s wasn’t it. My parents were enthusiasts and played too of course. I was forced to take tennis lessons for years. I never liked it but now I wouldn’t mind giving tennis a go!

Thanks. I think that as a kid, being forced to take anything almost guarantees you’re going to hate it, no? 😀

I had a good friend in college who was a really good tennis player but not good enough to go pro. He taught tennis at Disney World for some time, but I lost track of him. Your photo reminded me of those times. Enjoyed all the photos, but especially the young you and reading that your going to get a diploma in photography. Good for you!

Thanks Janet. What’s that saying? Those who can’t, teach. Not long after that shot was taken I completed my certification course to try teaching tennis myself. I had a few part-time gigs doing that for a while but I just didn’t love it enough to give up my full time job to teach.

Hmmmmm. As one who always wanted to teach and taught PE/health/sociology at the high school level for four years, ran my own little personal training business for 16 years, and home schooled our girls through high school, I might take exception to that saying, Norm. 🙂 Glad you found something you enjoyed.

I was only referring to my own lack of talent but you’re right, my attempt to poke fun at myself could easily be interpreted as insulting to those who teach; that was certainly not my intention. Thanks for the gentle reminder 🙂

I didn’t really think you meant it to be insulting, Norm, but I’ve heard that said a few too many times in my life, including the even more personal “Those who can do, those can’t, teach, and those who can’t teach, teach PE.” Sigh. Happy over-the-hump day.

Tennis is a good one. I enjoy tennis, I wish I could play more often.

Thanks Joey. If we ever meet I’ll make sure to bring a few rackets and a can of balls – we’ll find a nearby court and go hit somewhere.

You look like a serious player in that photo. It’s always interesting to look back on the things that set us on our current path. Thanks for sharing a little bit of early Norm.

Thanks Dan. It’s amazing how looking back the path from there to here seems totally logical, yet if you asked me back then it wasn’t even visible.
