Thursday Doors – September 15, 2016

Thursday Doors is a weekly feature allowing door lovers to come together to admire and share their favorite door photos from around the world. Feel free to join in on the fun by creating your own Thursday Doors post each week and then sharing it, between Thursday morning and Saturday noon (North American eastern time), by using the blue link-up button below.

Castleberry Hill – Atlanta Doorscursion – Part 1

Note: This week’s Thursday Doors post is written in two parts, showing you two different photographers’ impressions of the same doorscursion. The second part can be found over at Michelle Lunato’s Photography blog.

A few week back while in Atlanta on business I had the good fortune to meet up with fellow blogger and photographer Michelle Lunato.

Since she knows the area much better, she had suggested Castleberry Hill as a nearby neighborhood with good doorscursion potential. Well, Michelle turned out to be spot on.

Just southwest of the downtown core this federally recognized historic neighborhood contains an eclectic mix of restaurants and shops, with lots of old industrial spaces converted into trendy lofts and condos. We also saw some pretty cool street-art which I’ve saved for some future posts.

Here are some of my favorite (mostly door) discoveries:

One red panel?

We saw plenty of red brick and lots of lovely wrought-iron throughout the area.

With a name like ‘Match’ at first we thought this was a cigar lounge, but it turned out to be a Polynesian themed bar with an open-air rooftop lounge.

dsc_1534

Don’t you just hate when someone plants a tree right in the middle of your shot?

dsc_1542

On the lower left there was an old car mirror attached to the wall outside of this garage door, no doubt to offer a view of oncoming traffic before venturing out of this blind exit.

With the graffiti on the door it made for a great semi-selfie.

Across the street I found some “ghost doors’ in this old industrial building.

I fell in love with this old decorative mail box door.

dsc_1563

And this long abandoned phone junction box too.

dsc_1569

Of course I had to sneak in at least one shot of my hostess in action.

We stopped for lunch at a place called the No Mas Cantina which was an interesting mix of restaurant and artistic housewares/decorations shop. There was a wonderful interior door that my eye was drawn to the minute we walked in. Unfortunately there were some diners sitting at a table right in front of the door, blocking the view.

Michelle must have thought I was odd, the way I kept looking back every few minutes to see if they had left yet.

Finally the payoff – my favorite door of the day!

Please head on over to Michelle’s post to see her pics from the same walk.

Thanks for the great photos of my neighborhood! I live in the building with the tree planted in the middle of your shot. Sorry about that, but it was there when I moved in.

By the way, the look of the neighborhood is only part of the story. The people are what make it great. We have an Art Stroll every second Friday of the month, and our annual Loft Tour gives people a chance to step through some of those doors into some truly amazing converted spaces. The Castleberry Hill Loft Tour is 10/22/2016. More details at castleberryhill.org/lofttour. (Pardon the plug, but I figure folks who are interested in the doors might also be interested in what’s behind them.)

Thanks and welcome. Yes I saw the Art Stroll and Loft Tours while researching online. You’re right, it’s the people that make it stand out. And it’s nice to see that so many are involved in promoting and protecting this lovely neighborhood. Cheers!

  2. Looks like an enjoyable business trip with time to explore and do a doorscursion with a fellow blogger. I also liked your restaurant interior door and the fellow on the hanging swing chair (guess he likes it so much he doesn’t want to leave). Thanks for sharing your doors.

  3. Nice collection of doors, Norm. I love the mailboxes and the doors behind the iron gates.

I like the one for Match, and the one with the blue and yellow graphic screams 80’s.

Yes, I do hate it when someone plants a tree right in the middle of my shot. It’s also very bad feng shui to have one in front of doors. Tsk-tsk, tree planter! Great shots!

Thanks Jan. I’ve been there 6 times in the last dozen years for business and this was the first time I ventured outside of the main downtown area. Shame on me for taking so long.

Your last shot made me smile – it has the quirkiness of Southern California:) Great details of your door search. Also like that shot of the street mirror!

Great collection! It’s fun to see the different views from the same walk. And, I didn’t even see a few of those shots during the walk! Of course, my favorite the door from No Mas. It’s over-the-top cool. Thanks again for the meetup and walk. It was fun indeed.

That last door is definitely very impressive, but I’m struggling to choose a favourite from this collection. I’m actually leaning toward the “ghost doors” because it’s something that I probably wouldn’t have noticed / paid attention to, but now I’m intrigued

Wonderful collection! I love the final payoff shot, and that front inset so far back between the two brick buildings. Those old metal boxes (mailbox and junction) are treasures! What a successful doorscursion!

That final door is definitely a beaut … especially with the little table grouping in front of it, and the swing chair, of course 🙂
What an interesting mix of doors to select from. Besides the last one, the door that made me look twice was the plain grey door with the coloured wedges and stripes on it. This really appeals to me.
… and of course the selfie. I’m loving the hat, Norm 🙂

The wrought iron of Atlanta is beautiful, Norm. Your photos of mailbox, electrical rusty box and other details like the mural made this a diverse selection to share! My favorite and most beautiful, saving the best for last, was Swift and Company with the formal white doorframe. (#244)

  35. Dan Antion says:

What a great doorscursion! You have a bunch of my favorite kind of doors, starting with the mail box and the phone box. I love those old beauties. I like the door you picked, especially with the little scene going on in front of it. I think I like 215 Peters St the best. I do like your Norm-in-the-mirror photo, that’s pretty cool, and I always like brick buildings where windows and doors have been filled in. Great job, Norm. I can’t wait to see what Michelle came up with.
