One Liner Wednesday – Strangers You Meet on the Internet

Here’s my contribution for this week’s One-Liner Wednesday by Linda G. Hill:

While in Atlanta a few weeks ago I met up for the first time with fellow blogger Michelle Lunato for a morning photo walk that will be part of tomorrow’s #ThursdayDoors post.

We had made arrangements beforehand; Michelle and her boyfriend had been kind enough to offer to drive into town and pick me up at my hotel. Then we were to take a short drive to the neighborhood of Castleberry Hill to stroll around and look for doors and nice architecture to photograph.

Unfortunately due to some last minute changes in plans, her boyfriend was unable to make it, so Michelle came in to meet me alone.

While we were walking around chatting and taking pictures I noticed that Michelle’s phone was buzzing rather regularly.

Other than assuming that she was a very popular lady, I didn’t think much of it at first. But then at one point after stopping to respond to a text message, she explained what was going on: ladies, I’m sure you already know, right?

She had told her friends about her plans to meet up alone with a fellow blogger; a man she had never met in person before. A man she knew only from the internet….

So of course her friends were checking in on her to make sure she was okay and that I hadn’t turned out to be an axe murderer.

We laughed about it and I reassured her that as a Canadian I was only dangerous if I had a hockey stick in my hands.

Oh my, how I crack myself up 😀

When I got back home from the trip I was going through the pics with my wife, and recounting my morning doorscursion with Michelle. I mentioned how nice it is when we have people in our lives who care enough to be concerned about us in that way.

Since she follows my blog only semi-regularly my wife asked, “Which one is Michelle again?”

I replied “She’s the photographer/journalist who’s in the military reserve that I was telling you about.”

Seeing she wasn’t quite sure, I continued. “You remember some of those amazing pictures from Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan that I showed you?”

Her eyes lit up as she recalled, then she nodded and with a playful grin she said, “Oh, well if she survived doing tours in all of those dangerous places, she could probably kick your ass anyway, so maybe I should have been the one texting YOU.”

  1. A hockey stick, huh? Sometimes I think I could hurt anyone is inadvertently with my words. I wrote post last night, and the first comment I read about it this morning, started with, “Ouch!”

People cuss about cell phones and constant connectivity, but it’s a boon in many ways. Michelle must be more than popular, she must be popular and well thought of, which are not always the same thing. Oh, and if anybody takes anybody’s poutine, I hope they give some to me. I got ahold of some, down here in the southern midwest, and I’m a ravening addict!

Ahh another Poutine fan I see.
One of these days I may do a month-long poutine tour and write a review of some of my local favorites – with lots of messy pics of course.
And if you think the watered-down contraband stuff you get down there is good, then you ain’t seen nuthing yet 😉

This was a great reminder to us all, Norm! I am like a few people, too naive. . . The wife had a clever comeback, so funny! 😀 That would be quite an unexpected result for a man!

I can think of only a couple of bloggers I’ve stumbled upon who I would worry about meeting in person. Sounds like a lovely visit – look forward to seeing the resulting doors.

  6. You really got two lines out of that, Norm, the opening one and your wife’s. But I’ll let it go. The way I’ve usually met fellow bloggers, at least the men I’ve met, is at a Starbucks, where we can easily meet, sit and talk, and no one feels any pressure. After the first time/times, we can venture out. You’re right that having friends like that is a blessing. And speaking of hockey, a big pre-tournament game for Canada tonight against Russia. I love having hockey before hockey starts!

Your wife is spot on! But then again, you would have had your hockey stick with you so you may have had a chance! GO CAPS!!!

    Haha!
When I met Benson, I did the same. I told three people who I was with, where we were going, and had The Mister call me twice.

We Canadians are only dangerous with a hockey stick, a canoe and poutine! hahaha

I’m only dangerous if you try to take my poutine!

I really enjoyed this story, Norm. Indeed, we are fortunate when we have people who care about us in that way. It is also a sad reality that we NEED that sort of ‘back’up.’

It’s a positive sign that Michelle was open to meeting you and playing host to you on your trip. I like it when humans show that sort of willingness to connect. We all benefit by being able to see the pictures you captured!

You can have my poutine but come to think of it, I do swing a pretty mean canoe paddle 😉

    Funny!! 🙂

I guess I’m too naive for my own good. I have met several bloggers and It would never occur to me that the person I’ve been following on WP would be anything but the wonderful person I *knew* on WP.

Yeah Honey cracks me up all the time.
These day you can’t be too careful – it’s always a good idea to let a friend or a family member know where you’ll be and who you’re with.
But I think after a while of interacting online you can get a feel for who might turn out to be an axe murderer, and generally I don’t think I’m following any at the moment 😀

Always good to know your friends are axe murderers 🙂 I think your wife is right, though – no offense, but my money is on Michelle.
