Montréal Laneways

In one of my #ThursdayDoors posts last winter I featured something I had just stumbled upon, Montréal’s Ruelles Vertes (green laneways) which you can read more about here.

At the time I made a mental note to go back to see what these mini urban green spaces would be like in all their summer glory. And I will be getting to that in an upcoming post before the end of summer, I promise.

Unfortunately this week I had to settle for a regular laneway because I flat out forgot to take note of where to find the best ones before heading into town on my doorscursion…D’OH!

I did make some wonderful discoveries all the same in my old neighborhood of Rosemont/Petite-Patrie:

    Gorgeous! I was in Montreal a few years ago when the graffiti artists were working. There are some seriously beautiful murals in Old Montreal!

    I really liked this post with lots of interesting details and unique qualities to the choices, Norm. The angled cream colored doors were so cool!
    As a person named after a bird, I must applaud the artist. I agree, to lovely to be hidden down a back alley. It reminds me of an Eastern country wise man or prophet like Kahlil Gibran, peaceful and beautiful. 🙂

    Nice! I’ve found some great treasures in alleys and side streets, but nothing like that mural! 🙂 Such pretty colors there.
    I love the singular garage door, with its blue ‘shingled’ roof. Love it!

      Thanks Joey. Yes that single door has so much potential. Give me a few different colored cans of paint and let me go to town on prettying up that one, and then I’d need to re-shingle too though 🙂

    Very interesting angle on those garage doors – it looks nicer than if they were in a straight line. I love that beautiful mural. I think by what it says in the dialogue bubble that it’s by Shalak Attack. She’s a Canadian-Chilean artist. I looked her up on Youtube and found some good videos about her work.

      Thanks for digging for more info on that artist Jean I did the same and think you’re right. I also came to realize that I’ve photographed a few of here other works in Toronto last year too. I was a big fan of her work before I even knew who she was 😀

    That bit of street art is gorgeous, Norm, and I’m with you on how to difficult it might be to navigate into/out of one’s garage in that first shot, although they have beautiful doors. When I was growing up, there were alleys around us, but these days they seem to only be found in older parts of cities.

      Thanks Janet. I’m not sure what exactly has changed about urban design but you’re right, back alleys/laneways just don’t seem to be necessary any more.

    The hinged doors are very interesting and unusual. I like them. That being said, if I was the proud owner of the one on the right, my car would be sitting outside. 🙂 Love the mural and applaud its talented artist.

      Thanks Judy. I kinda agree about the one on the right, but I’m wondering about winter. Parking on the street is murder during snow storms and indoor spots in residential areas are at a premium in the city. Maybe I’d leave my car in the garage from December to March and just take the bus 😀

    I agree with Vicky. There is an allure to back alleys that begs for investigation.

    Those triple doors are very interesting because of how they are hinged. How odd to have what appears to be a folding door on a garage. Can’t say I’ve ever seen that before.

      Thanks Joanne. I remember seeing folding garage doors like that on back alley garages when I was a kid in the sixties. They’ve come up with a few better designs since then 🙂

    I like the garage with the angled doors. They appear to be folding doors? Anyway, it’s a nice look, but I agree with you, I wouldn’t want the one on the far right. I like the mural , but I am strangely drawn to the bare (except for graffiti) wooden door. There is potential there. Great collection today, Norm.

      Thanks Dan, yes those beige ones were folding doors, I’d guess they go back to the late 50’s or early 60’s. I agree, that bare door does have so much potential.

      Thank you Vicky. I’m always afraid that someone will see this strange guy walking through the alley with a camera and decide to call the cops on me, but so far so good 😀
