Thursday Doors – June 2, 2016

More Doors in Downtown Montréal

Here are a few more shots from a recent doorscursion on residential streets in downtown Montreal.

I believe these are on Stanley Street in a part of downtown known as the Golden Square Mile. There are some beautiful, well-maintained old buildings in this part of the city.

For you architecture fans, where possible I’ve included wider shots to offer more of a view of the entire building.

    I love the big golden entrance-way at the beginning. It’s the door off-centre to the archway that really works for me.

    I wanted to savor and not rush through this Doors post, Norm. I left a comment this morning before work, on the pine and wordless post. I came back to look at all the details this evening. I enjoyed all of these gorgeous doors but must admit my favorite us the second one where the whole building has a red brick castle look to it. The frilly and lacy grille work is so pretty!

      Thanks Manja. Yes that house is really something. I can’t imagine what this neighbourhood was like 150 years ago when there were only a few big homes like this per street.

    So much beauty! I especially like the doors that are up a couple of stairs inside deep recesses. It’s like being inside while you’re still outside. This was a real treat!

      Thanks Joan those are my favorites too; a nice way to be sheltered from the elements while you fumble for your keys. Unfortunately it’s a design element that became less practical when the building codes changed around the beginning of the 20th century.

    Old wooden double doors, set in stone entrances. Wow – what’s not to like here? It’s hard to choose. I think I like all the doors. I like the photo of 3460. It seems to be calling me up those stairs and into that entrance. These buildings look like they’ve been here a long time. I am glad to see them all in such good shape. Great doors Norm!

      Thanks Dan. Many of the original homes and buildings in the Golden Square Mile are mid-nineteenth century – and with a few rare exceptions, they are all well maintained.
      What’s also nice is how even some of the newer ones were built to replicate the look of the ones already there.

      Thanks Jean. You’re right, those steps on the second one do have a nice worn look about them. Though I’m still scratching my head about the extra-low placement of the mail slot :-/

        They probably didn’t want to spoil the look of the door. I would prefer a wooden mail slot that can be stained or painted to blend into a door, rather than have it stand out. I’m not even sure if they are available. 😉
