Thursday Doors – May 19, 2016

Thursday Doors is a weekly feature allowing door lovers to come together to admire and share their favorite door photos from around the world. Historic Old Homes in Downtown Montréal

Here are a few of my favourite shots from a recent doorscursion on a few of the residential side streets in the area of downtown Montreal known as the Golden Square Mile.

There are some beautiful well-maintained old homes in this part of the city and the more I wandered around the more wonderful doors I discovered.

    Norm I’m reading The Louise Penny “Inspector Ganache series” that takes place in Quebec countryside. and Montreal of course. Today I’m reading about Quebec City. Your images help me visualize walking down the streets and into the magnificent Chateau Frontenac.

    I loved the first one best. I must have been raised in the woods by a pack of wild red stones, because I am absolutely LOVING that facade and detail!

    You are off having fun and here I am a day late but behaving myself.I can’t believe you can get that close to those fancy doors. around CA they would be locked behind gates and long driveways. Love them all!!!

    Those must be doors to downtown mansions! They are fabulous! Happy Victoria Day!

      Thanks. Yes some of them are very much considered mansions. Most were country estates built for/by wealthy business people who conducted their commerce down by the old port. Over the years as the city expanded, streets were widened and the whole downtown area just sort of shifted and sprung up around them.

    I love the first door. The second has very interesting details and I originally thought it was my favorite, but I like how everything comes together with the first one. Enjoy your holiday!

    I think I prefer the first door but really they are all lovely and we shouldn’t have to choose our favorite child! (ha) They are all pretty and interesting and different in their own ways. But, the ornate decoration on the first door speaks to me.

    Have a lovely holiday. Try not to be spying every door you walk by while you are enjoying some downtime. 😉

      I saw doors EVERYWHERE 😀

    So hard to choose, they’re all fabulous. I love the warmth the first one projects, with the colors and the arch and the peek at the pencil pleats…Buuut, I love the iron work on the black one, too — especially since it’s well-worn. Too hard. Great doors! 🙂

      It is indeed. It’s in a part of downtown that 150-200 years ago was actually more country estates for wealthy local businessmen than an actual part of the city. A lot has changed since then.

    How amazing to have these magnificent doors as the front door to a house. How grand they must be inside. Very hard to choose a favourite but I think the first one just edges it to the top of my list.     Hard to believe these incredible doors are doors to homes! I’d love to see the houses as well. Too difficult to choose, so I won’t; I’ll just enjoy. Have a wonderful holiday and enjoy the offline time in the real world, Norm.

      Thanks Janet. I’ll try to include wider views that show more of the building next time. Most of these old homes are too big for today’s smaller families and too expensive for most to own. In a lot of cases they’re converted into professional offices for lawyers, notaries, insurance brokers. Thankfully most are very well maintained.

    I like the first door best as it is most inviting and the place that I would love to call home. Plus, it offers the opportunity to be out of the rain while fumbling for keys.

    These are wonderful doors, Norm. I think I like the second one the best. I like the way the iron work and the wood work are married in those graceful curves. I do really like the arched entryway of the first one, too. You make it hard.

      Thanks. That red stone is my favourite too. There was a building right across the street with that same stone but the door was an ugly plain painted steel one 😦

    The second and third one are my favorites because of the iron work. The decoration of the second one is almost baroque, although the woodwork has a touch of Jugendstil. The third one is elegant and stylish. All in all a street I would like to walk up and down a couple of times.

    I like the first one best – there’s just something about the way the stonework surround and the wood and glass door look ‘right’ together, no fuss no nonsense 🙂
