This week Hugh’s Photo Challenge is looking for images that portray Rust.
In a post I did a few weeks ago I included some images of a unique architectural feature in Montreal: our outdoor spiral iron staircases.
They are lovely to look at indeed, but not only are they treacherous when covered in snow and ice, but they are a pain in the backside (and the wallet) to maintain.
Here’s a good example of what happens when they don’t get that regular fresh coat of paint needed to protect the iron from the elements:
Lord knows how or why the owner would have let this get so bad, but they are now going to have replace a very expensive set of stairs.
Thanks for looking 🙂

Beautiful for photography but an accident waiting to happen.

I love the architectural detail in this building, but those steps are not structurally sound.

I love these staircases. So very Montreal. Makes me homesick.

I couldn’t hit ‘like’ on that one, Norm, because all I could picture was someone falling to their death. But, it sure fit the challenge of ‘rust.’ 🙂

Yeah, metal and lots of water over long periods of time is a bad combination. They look great from a distance, but I’d rather not trust my weight to them.

They are going to have to replace it sometime – before it breaks apart!

Makes we glad we have inspectors for the important structures! And the last photo was my fav – feeling the thinness and seeing thru- very powerful weathering example – and almost see a life analogy for maintenance in all areas!

Thanks. Yes an owner can face serious fines for putting tenants in danger like this. The good news is that it seemed like major renovations were under way so it won’t be like this for much longer 🙂

that is good news – and coming back again I feel that gritty texture of rust – such a great entry for the challenge

Wow, I can only imagine it won’t be long before those stairs need replacing. However, I have to say that rust can make some objects into works of art.
Thanks for joining in this week’s challenge, Norm. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Thanks Hugh. They were in the middle of major renovations so I suspect these stairs will be replaced soon. Around here a landlord can be seriously fined for putting tenants in danger due to poor maintenance. I’d hazard a guess that this came about due to decades of neglect.

Thanks, it’s one of my faves too. I had a hard time choosing which pics to use for this challenge, but these ones seemed to have the most impact.

That is some serious rust Norm. I hope those stairs aren’t still in use

I believe they were being used Dan, but hopefully not for much longer. They seemed to be gutting the downstairs unit so a major reno of the building was well under way.

Yikes – the rust has completely eaten away big chunks of the support. I can’t help but wonder how this has affected the structural integrity of the staircase!

Yikes is right. No need to wonder in my opinion; those stairs are simply not safe. I know I wouldn’t use them, that’s for sure.

They may be a pain to maintain but they sure make for an awesome picture Norm!
