Thursday Doors – September 3, 2015

Library of Parliament

A while back we took a short trip to Ottawa our nation’s capitol to visit the Parliament buildings.

You can see some of the other doors I captured on that trip in this previous post.

While there we to took a guided tour inside the Centre Block which contains the House of Commons:

As well as dozens of ministerial offices and my favourite space the Library of Parliament.

Unfortunately the lighting is very dark in the hallway leading to the library and I didn’t have my tripod with me to take a longer exposure shot.

To make matters worse, as our nice but somewhat intense tour guide lady kept telling us, “NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY! NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY! NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY!” was allowed 😦

So unfortunately this was as good a picture of its beautiful entrance door as I could get:

Needless to say that if I do go back, I’ll be sure to pack my tripod.

On the other side of that door is the kind of space I could get lost in for hours:

Rich warm wood tones, large workstations with comfortable seating, quiet nooks and alcoves, and a collection that exceeds 600,000 volumes… sigh 🙂

Gee I guess it’s a good thing I stuck that one door picture in the middle of this #ThursdayDoors post 😀

    What a fabulous library Norm! I could also imagine being happily lost in there for weeks!     Wow that’s majestic! Wow! I’m totally laughing at how you don’t think these pictures aren’t good enough. SOME of us are just happy when our photos aren’t blurry! lol These pictures are amazing!

      It’s one of those thing about photography: We know what our eyes saw because we were there, but then sometimes it seems the picture doesn’t quite do it justice.

    Amazing architecture! It reminds me some of the inside of our Supreme Court Building in DC.

    Although I’ve been to Ottawa and seen the Parliament Buildings, I’ve never actually been inside. That’s kind of a sad thing for me to admit to.
    Great photos … although you might not be happy with your photo of the library door, I thought it was a great picture showing the magnificent arches in the hallway.
    Although the House of Commons and Senate are quite familiar to most Canadians, I’ve never seen a photo of the library before. Wow! That second last photo hints at how huge it must be!!

      Thanks Joanne. Yes the Library has always been my favourite space in those buildings. If you go back the tours are free and run 7 days a week. They stagger groups of about 25 at a time every 15 minutes alternating between English and French. You have to line up for tickets for that day in advance but it’s worth it.
      They told us that at the end 2017 they’re shutting down the tours for 10 years for planned renovations.

    Wow! It’s really hard to come up with a better word in response to these photos Norm. Those spaces are beautiful. I think I could spend a long time in that library. Great job!

    I think the shadow and golden, natural lighting really set this photo up to be gorgeous, Norm. The cement details (or masonry) around the arch creates a cathedral look. I may have the “wrong” term for those built up pieces. This was an overall favorite with the Peace Tower inxluded. Have a great Thursday, Norm. 🙂
