Thursday Doors – July 30, 2015

Here is one from a quiet alleyway in Siena Italy.

We stumbled across a few quiet peaceful scenes like this during our time there, and oftentimes the whole thing felt staged. As if people were hanging out laundry off the sides of the buildings for the benefit of us shutterbug tourists.

I never did find out if residents actually hung their laundry in plain view like this for practical reasons or if it was for show, but it sure did make for some nice shots.

And it seemed like every building we passed had a lovely old wooden door:

Was just in Milan… and Riga! They use wood for everything in Latvia, they have so many trees… should have taken some shots of the glorious doors there for you.

I really liked the elegant and ornate door in contrast to the everyday laundry, city scape scenery, Norm. Italy would be right up there with my few places I need to see someday. I was blessed to go on a shoestring to Spain and Portugal with our Spanish Club in high school. My second door post is about a hot pink door. 🙂

I stayed in Siena for a couple weeks years ago. We had a washer that was also a dryer but were told not to use the dryer function because electricity was so expensive and it took a long time to dry the clothes. You will see laundry hanging out of windows and balconies all over Italy.

That all makes a lot of sense. It just seems odd from a North American perspective. We hang laundry too, but our clotheslines are kept it in the back yard where they’re not in full view.

Gorgeous! It has that quintessential European vibe. My best friend is studying abroad in Siena this fall–I hope she wakes up to a scene like this every day.

  16. Such lovely decorative doors in what looks like a very modest building.

In Germany I was surprised to see they hang their bedding out the window even in the winter! I don’t think it’s for show! Probably just a habit acquired from the days before dryers!

Great shot. We saw laundry hanging on streets like this as well as in ‘questionable’ back alleys. Their living quarters are tight; i think thay are ysing every available space. Siena – as all of Tuscany – is a magical place ( altho’ that horse race is 2nd only to Pamplona’s running of the bulls in the ‘what are they thinking’ category!)
