Butterflies Go Free 2015 at the Montreal Botanical Gardens

The Montréal Botanical Gardens does an impressive job of putting together different exhibits throughout the year to attract new visitors and keep them coming back for more.

Last fall we visited after dark, for the Gardens of Light exhibit in the Chinese and Japanese pavilions.

This spring they’ve come up with another wonderful idea that ties in nicely with the season of rebirth. Their Butterflies Go Free which runs until April 26th offers visitors an opportunity to see a wide variety of butterflies and moths that they would never get to see up-close and personal in their everyday lives.

Thousands of butterflies, encompassing several dozen species have been released in one of the main greenhouses and visitors can stroll along to marvel at the amazing range of sizes, shapes, and colors that these magical creatures come in. It’s a great way to introduce children to the wonders of the natural world and it’s an awful lot of fun for grown-ups too.

The gardens are closed on Mondays until May 14th so the exhibit is open 6 days a week from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm. The entrance fee includes access to all of the indoor flower and plant exhibits as well as the neighboring Insectarium. Plan to arrive early on weekends to avoid line-ups.

The Montreal Botanical Gardens is located at the corner of Sherbrooke St. East and Blvd. Pie-IX right across from the Olympic Stadium. On-site parking is $12.50 for the day. For public transit users, take the 139 bus north 2 stops up the hill from the Pie-IX Metro station.
