Back in 2013 Honey and I had the good fortune to spend some time in Tuscany, and as the hopeless romantic that I am I thought today, for Valentine’s Day, I’d share some of my favorite pics from the Ponte Vecchio in Florence.
The legend says that if lovers write their names on a lock and then secure it to the bridge and toss the key into the Arno river below, they can ensure that their love will last forever.
The practice is common with many among the thousands of daily visitors, and the bridge is slowly being overrun by locks placed there by lovebirds from all over the world.
So much so that the city has taken to regularly removing the locks, and despite the threat of hefty fines, persistent lovers keep coming back.
And so love prevails and the tradition continues. Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!
And as always, thanks for looking 🙂
What a wonderful story, Norm, and great photos as well. I wonder how many keys are at the bottom of that river?

From what I hear there are tens of thousands of keys on that riverbed and it is becoming an environmental concern 😦

There is a similar bridge in Paris. Both warm my heart. ❤

Yes apparently there are a few other places in Europe where this is very popular. It is a heartwarming gesture.

I heard recently that some cities are having their new bridges engineered to withstand the weight of padlocks.

That would not surprise me at all. All that extra metal adds up.

Oh, the memories. We were there in 2008, but I didn’t see the locks. What a loss on my part. 🙂

Just as good an excuse as any to go back then 😉
