Painting with Light – Long Exposure Photography

One of the fun things about shooting with a DSLR as opposed to a point and shoot camera is the creative results you can get once you’re comfortable enough to not shoot in Auto mode.

Long exposure shots are one of the prime examples. We see long exposures often in landscape photography with clouds and waterfalls to smooth out and blur motion.

Another fun thing to do with long exposures in a dark room is to put the camera on a tripod or a flat stable surface like a table, take different handheld light sources, set the shutter speed upwards of 8-10 seconds, and with the help of another person or a remote shutter trigger you can literally paint with light.

Here are some of the results of my recent experiments:

  1. Great experiments! I particularly like the second from last – for some reason it makes me think of a desert storm …..

That’s interesting, I guess you have to use a very low light source to get a result like that
